It now looks like you might want to pay attention to Apple’s limits on the “minimum system requirements” for Apple Intelligence. Because in the blink of an eye, the minimum storage requirement has been found to have increased from the original 4GB to 7GB.
Alright! The “blink of an eye” I mentioned earlier is actually a bit of an exaggeration; basically, the change came around the time of the iOS 18.1 to iOS 18.2 releases.
But for users who purchase iPhone / iPad / Mac devices with lower storage capacity, they may run into a situation where, in order to use Apple Intelligence-related features, they’ll need to free up additional space to download the necessary data before unlocking the full Apple generative AI experience.
That is to say, including foreign media and ourselves, we can all understand that as Apple Intelligence’s features become increasingly rich – especially after iOS 18.2 added Genmoji, Image Wand, Image Playground, and even Visual Intelligence visual search.
Adding to that, Apple is quite insistent on the privacy encryption features that on-device processing can provide (especially given what recently happenedStatus of privacy-related lawsuitsAh… or even preparation for multiple languages? It should come as no surprise that the storage space required for Apple Intelligence feature modules won’t decrease—it will only keep stacking up and growing.
However, one would have expected Apple to clearly spell out the minimum requirements when the feature first launched – maybe at least holding steady until something like iOS 19 before bumping it up another level? As it turns out, within just a few months of Apple Intelligence’s release, the minimum storage requirement jumped from 4GB to 7GB.
Moreover, if you look closely at the information on the official website, it currently states “iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later” — it wasn’t even changed only after reaching “.2” yet.
All in all, even in terms of the base storage increase, the 128GB minimum on the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPad mini (A17 Pro) / iPad mini 7 doesn’t “seem” like an outrageously large storage number (you can probably still make do by squeezing a bit, right?).
However, foreign media have also pointed out that due to Apple’s preference for on-device processing, enabling Apple Intelligence on multiple devices could generate a higher and larger volume of data than expected.
From this perspective, perhaps after RAM and SoC performance have been tuned to the point where nearly the entire ecosystem can support Apple Intelligence, the next stage might be for Apple to comprehensively review devices’ base storage capacity in response to the AI experience?
Most people would probably be happy to see this, as long as it doesn’t cause prices to go up (it shouldn’t, right?).
