Although functions such as “split keyboard” should be very familiar to iPad users – the quick launch method of extending the two thumbs outward is also very intuitive. This kind of function is for users of non-Apple systems, especially folding mobile phones that use the concept of “screen can be made larger or smaller”.
I believe everyone can agree that if this more flexible input method theme layout can be used, it will definitely bring a better user experience – not only the input experience on the large screen, because the virtual keyboard can be configured to lean left and right without having to extend the palm too much. The key point is that it can effectively avoid touching the depression of the folding screen (some people have this problem), so that the English letters around the center such as T, Y, G, and V are no longer in awkward screen areas.
A while ago, someone discovered that Google began to provide an advanced input method option in Gboard that splits the layout into left and right sides (Split layout to include duplicated key) – judging from the description, it should be that the letters on both sides of the central line can be repeated in a row, so that whether you are used to touching the central key with your left or right fingers, you can input smoothly. Although no one knows how they will implement this new keyboard arrangement in Gboard, it can be seen that Google still has its own ideas for improving such a feature.
This split keyboard layout, which was not really seen on folding phones or tablets at the time, is now being tried by foreign media.
You can see it from the screenshot function. The split keyboard feature currently being tested by Gboard will basically free up about two virtual keyboards. And it seems that this demonstration also has the option to activate key repeating, so you can see that the G and V near the center can be seen on the left and right sides (T and Y are not repeated); the space key is still across the center of the screen. The only button left in the center that is more likely to be pressed into the folding screen dent and is relatively awkward to use is the gear button for setting functions.
Speaking of the many functional improvements Google has recently launched for tablets, they seem to pay tribute to other systems. But seriously speaking, Apple’s iPadOS is still the tablet computer system that is currently firmly occupying the forefront of the market. Maybe in the end it will be like running and swimming as many people joke. However, I believe that as long as it is a good experience, users will definitely be lucky if they can keep up.
