Although many features are still Pixel-exclusive for now, the momentum behind the AI-related feature development for the Google Recorder app seems to show no sign of stopping.
Foreign media Android Authority recently discovered a new feature called “Clear Voice” appearing in the latest v4.2.20241001.701169069 version of the Google Recorder / Pixel Recorder app.
Interestingly, it also explicitly mentions that enabling it will require turning off stereo recording and external microphone support — just what kind of interesting feature needs so many conditions? Let’s take a look at the details together.
「Reduce background noise while recording for clearer speech playback. External mic and stereo are not supported（降低錄音時的背景噪音，提供更清晰的語音回放。不支援外接麥克風與立體聲錄製）」
This description dug out of the code basically already explains the general functionality of Clear Voice – looks like Google saw the reviews about “background noise in recording quality” in their own recorder app. They came up with the idea of using AI to highlight the human voice and reduce background noise in recordings.
As for why it might be said that AI technology may be used, it’s probably because this feature is placed in the AI summary-related “hdmic_setting_summary”, right?
At this stage, the Google Recorder app supports quite a variety of features, including trimming recordings, searching transcripts, backup, and automatic language detection that’s only been available since Pixel 6. As for the new Clear Voice feature, it’s currently expected to also be (temporarily) limited to Pixel devices.
Although currently only the code for the functionality is present, it still makes one curious about how it performs.
