After the launch of Android 12, many people began to look forward to Android 13, with all kinds of obscenities, renderings, and imaginations. Now the first developer preview version of Android 13 is hot. In addition to the highlights of some of Google’s major updates to this year’s mobile operating system, the Android 13 preview version also includes upgraded theme options, privacy features, language controls, and a large number of back-end updates.

On Android 12, Google focused on Material You’s customizable theme, and Android 13 further expanded dynamic application icons to all applications other than Google’s own. The theme icon feature, which allows all apps to appear in a hue that complements the wallpaper, requires only app developers to provide compatible monochromatic app icons. The feature first appeared on Pixel devices, but Google said it is working with other brands to promote it more broadly.
There have also been adjustments in authorization and security. The new photo picker will allow users to share photos and videos with a single application without granting the application permission to view all photos on the entire device. This feature will be rolled out to all phones running Android 11 and newer operating systems in Google’s plan.

Of course, there are many changes in this new Android developer preview that are not visible on the surface, and these changes may not be felt by users. For example, new WiFi access will allow apps to discover and connect to appropriate WiFi networks without requiring location permission; in the language options, you can customize different language settings per app, which is very convenient for users who want to use multiple languages. Google also stated that it will continue to invest in the “Project Mainline” plan to provide various updates through Google Play rather than the operating system itself.
Google’s timeline indicates that it intends to release a developer preview version of Android 13 during February and March, transition to a beta test version in April, and expect the system to enter a stable stage around June or July, and then launch an official version later this year. Given that Android 12 has stability issues on many devices, we can only hope that this year’s update will be smoother than the previous generation.
As a reminder, since the developer preview version is designed for engineers who have technical skills and need to adjust development work with Android updates, it is highly not recommended for ordinary users to install and use it. Especially if you only have one mobile phone and it is the main mobile phone in daily life, do not try it easily, lest it will affect your experience of using the mobile phone due to instability. If you really want to try something new, you should at least wait until the relatively stable Beta version. Otherwise, I suggest that it is safest to wait for the official version.
