How much longer until Gemini lands on Apple Intelligence? Top leaker isn’t optimistic.
Seeing Apple take off starting with iOS 18, laying out a complete Apple Intelligence AI system experience pathway for mobile devices with remarkable efficiency.
In the beta version starting with iOS 18.1, not only can you quickly access it from every corner of the system — you can directly summon Siri to help handle tasks, or even use the Camera Control button for quick image search — but it also places greater emphasis on privacy protections that many services struggle to offer with peace of mind.
At minimum, when data is handed over to third-party services or even processed off-device by Private Cloud Compute, users are fully informed about how their data will be handled. In subsequent updates, this complete experience was also extended to the third-party service OpenAI ChatGPT.

All of this is very exciting, and the other third-party services officially mentioned, such as integrating Google Gemini AI into Apple Intelligence, offer a different vision and experience. However, even so far, you can feel Apple’s extremely proactive attitude toward the development of Apple Intelligence.
However, Mark Gurman, Bloomberg’s well-known Apple reporter, holds a relatively pessimistic view on whether there’s a chance to see other third-party integrations before ChatGPT is expected to be “formally” integrated into iOS by the end of the year. According to him:
「Other future improvements include an integration with Google Gemini. But Apple will probably give OpenAI a nice window of exclusivity, especially since it isn’t exactly paying for the technology. So I wouldn’t expect the Gemini chatbot to arrive in iOS until next year.（其他未來的改進包括與 Google Gemini 整合。但 Apple 可能會給 OpenAI 一段不錯的獨佔期，尤其是因為它並沒有真正為該技術付費。因此，我不認為 Gemini 聊天機器人會在明年之前出現在 iOS 上。）」

That said, although there is currently no news clearly indicating whether OpenAI’s partnership with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into the initial Apple Intelligence launch involves money—that is, a paid exclusive business model—for now it mainly allows both parties to increase exposure and potentially develop further new revenue streams in the future.
Based on Mark Gurman’s statements, one would infer that even though Google has previously had a business model of paying to secure default search engine status on Apple devices, there currently doesn’t seem to be any indication they plan to follow the same playbook with Gemini integration into Apple’s system — especially since the EU seems to be quite wary of similar practices lately, right?

Because of this, OpenAI ChatGPT, after testing during this period and with its expected official launch in December, will likely secure exclusivity for a considerable period of time through Apple Intelligence integration. Therefore, Mark Gurman predicts that Gemini will probably have to wait until next year before it can make its way onto Apple Intelligence.
Personally, I think part of it is also because Apple’s own language model may still need some time to reach a certain standard — Chinese support is definitely not coming until next year at the earliest. In the meantime, being able to support third-party ChatGPT can help make up for some areas where functionality may not have caught up yet.
Or to put it more directly, Chinese support could rely on ChatGPT to provide assistance before official support arrives. Although from the outside, introducing third-party services makes it seem like Apple may no longer be able to initially hold off competition through its so-called ecosystem advantage in the AI race.
Seriously though, given how deeply services like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Anthropic have already penetrated systems like iOS, the initial ChatGPT integration might also be Apple’s way of carving out more room for its own generative AI to grow, don’t you think?
