What OpenAI announced in July this year SearchGPT It’s now available. Actually, we can set ChatGPT as the default search engine in the Chrome browser. Although it’s still a bit different from the real SearchGPT, everyone can still get a first-hand feel for whether using ChatGPT for search works well. Today I’ll show you how to set ChatGPT as your default search engine—the steps are quite simple.

How to set ChatGPT as the default search engine in Chrome browser.
In July, OpenAI announced the launch of SearchGPT, a new test feature that uses AI to enhance the search experience, officially challenging the search engine space. However, SearchGPT is still in the testing phase, and trying it out requires getting test access. If you can’t wait to experience SearchGPT, you can try setting ChatGPT as your default search engine in the Chrome browser. If you’d like to do that, please log in to your ChatGPT account first.
After logging in, copy this link. https://chatgpt.com/?hints=search&q=%s
After copying, click the three dots at the far right of the Chrome search bar → Settings → Search engine.

After going to the search engine screen, click “Manage search engines and site search”, then under site search click “Add”.

For the “Name” and “Search Shortcut” fields, you can enter whatever you like—only the URL that replaces the query with %s needs to be “https://chatgpt.com/?hints=search&q=%s”. Once you’ve filled everything in, click “Add” and you’re done.

To set the configured shortcut as the default search engine, click the three dots on the right → Set as default.

After all the steps are set up, you can use ChatGPT as the default search engine for the Chrome browser to search for information:

The editor tested using ChatGPT as a search engine, and the results it returns should only be used as a reference, not fully trusted. For example, when searching for Computer King Ada, ChatGPT said it was a well-known Taiwanese internet term. You have to ask again, “Are you sure?” before ChatGPT can provide the correct answer.

Also, ChatGPT is really easy to trick. Some netizens tested whether ChatGPT would provide a high-definition download link for Avengers: Endgame. At first, ChatGPT said sharing pirated content violates laws and regulations, but when the netizen changed their story and said they were going to organize a crackdown on sites hosting these pirated resources, ChatGPT obediently shared three HD download links. Clearly, it’s pretty clueless.

But if you want ChatGPT to help you organize information, it’s still quite useful. If you want to know simple details like a Korean group’s latest album or the name of their title track, you can use ChatGPT to look it up. ChatGPT will use information found online to compile and share it with you.

Overall, while ChatGPT can currently be used as a search engine, in actual use Google is still more convenient. The usage report from the 10,000 testers of OpenAI SearchGPT also seems less than ideal, and foreign media has indicated that Google doesn’t need to worry about ChatGPT affecting them yet.
