Microsoft has officially confirmed that the next version of Windows 11 to be launched in the second half of this year is Windows 11 version 26H2, continuing the rhythm of releasing major versions in H2 (second half of the year) every year. This also means that Windows 11’s annual update model remains stable and will not be adjusted as frequently as in the past Windows 10 period.
Windows 11 26H2 is coming soon, but some computers can’t upgrade
Like 24H2 and 25H2, 26H2 is still built on the same 2024 platform version. In other words, these three versions share the same underlying architecture, so 26H2 is not a major system change, but a continuation of the functions and improvements of the existing platform. Microsoft emphasizes that this approach can make the Windows service model more predictable and efficient, reduce the risk of interruption during enterprise deployment, while maintaining system security and stability.
Microsoft pointed out in the description that by unifying the platform and continuing to launch innovative features on it, companies no longer have to invest a lot of resources in large-scale upgrade projects, but can focus on work that can truly improve the user experience. For ordinary consumers, this also means that the upgrade process will be smoother and there will be no compatibility or verification troubles. Because 26H2 shares the same platform as 24H2 and 25H2, they share the following common features:
- Same source code base
- Consistent security and quality updates
- Same compliance verification standards
Therefore, as long as the unit is running 24H2 or 25H2 without any issues, upgrading to 26H2 can be painless. For enterprise IT managers, this cross-version consistency significantly reduces deployment costs; for general users, they don’t have to worry about drivers or applications not working after upgrading.
However, Microsoft also specifically pointed out that 26H2 will not be available to all Windows 11 users. If you are currently using Windows 11 version 26H1, you will not be able to upgrade to 26H2 this fall. The reason is that 26H1 is a special version built for Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA RTX Spark devices, and its platform version is newer than 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.
In other words, the underlying architecture of 26H1 is actually newer than 26H2, so there is technically no “upgrade” path. Microsoft said that it will provide 26H1 users with the option to upgrade to a newer version in the future, but it has not yet announced the timetable. According to current estimates, 26H1 devices may receive a 27H2 upgrade notification at the end of next year. As for the official launch time of 26H2, although Microsoft has not announced the exact date, it has confirmed that the version is ready to enter the release stage. According to past practice, the H2 update of Windows 11 usually starts to be pushed from the end of September to the beginning of October, so this year’s schedule will roughly fall in the same range.
Overall, Windows 11 version 26H2 is a continuous update, focusing on maintaining platform consistency, reducing upgrade costs, and improving deployment efficiency, rather than introducing large-scale new features. For most users, this is a stable, secure, and highly compatible version; for enterprise IT, it is an annual update node that is easier to manage.
