YouTube Shorts finally launches the long-awaited distraction-free mode

Five years ago, YouTube Shorts was officially launched. At that time, the explosive growth of TikTok had changed the global audio and video market. It was only a matter of time before other platforms launched short video functions. Looking back now, Shorts has not only successfully established itself, but has also become one of the most important short video platforms in the world. During this period, YouTube continued to adjust the interface and enhance tools, trying to find a better balance between creators and audiences.

YouTube Shorts finally launches the long-awaited distraction-free mode

Today, YouTube is announcing a new set of Shorts updates aimed at improving the viewing experience and making usage more efficient. The most anticipated feature in this update is a new viewing option called “Clear Screen mode.” When enabled, all interface elements such as buttons, text, and icons on the screen will be hidden, leaving only the video itself, allowing users to focus on watching the content without distractions. This kind of “clean mode” has already appeared on other short-form video platforms, so YouTube’s follow-up can be said to be in compliance with the long-term needs of users.

In addition to interface adjustments, Shorts also adds more playback controls. Users can now freely adjust the playback speed, up to 2x speed, allowing people who want to browse content quickly to use the platform more efficiently. For viewers who are accustomed to watching long-form videos at double speed, this update brings the use of Shorts closer to the experience of the main YouTube platform.

Another useful update is the built-in mute option. Although Shorts has always been able to achieve the same effect through the system volume control, adding a clear mute button to the interface allows users to switch viewing modes more quickly, which is especially suitable for use during commuting or public places.

YouTube has also simultaneously adjusted the design of interactive buttons. Officially confirmed that the like button on Shorts will be removed, and the like icon will be changed to a heart symbol, which is more consistent with the interactive language of other social platforms. Although this change does not affect the essence of the function, it reflects YouTube’s desire to make the interaction method of Shorts lighter, more emotional, and more in line with the use context of short videos.

In addition, YouTube once again emphasized that the watch timer for Shorts can now be set to “zero minutes.” This feature is equivalent to providing a way to “disable Shorts”, allowing users who don’t want to see short videos to completely remove them from the home page feed. This is an important update for viewers who have long complained about Shorts taking over the homepage.

Overall, this wave of updates focuses on “reducing interference” and “improving the sense of control.” Clean mode allows the video to be the sole focus of the screen; double-speed playback and mute buttons allow users to more freely control the viewing rhythm; adjustments to the interactive buttons make the interface more concise and consistent. While these features are not revolutionary innovations, they do respond to long-standing user feedback and make the Shorts experience more mature.

All new features will be rolled out to users around the world starting today. If you want to be the first to experience them, just update the YouTube app to the latest version.
