Netflix may soon require every profile on an account to use a unique email address

Netflix’s strategy to crack down on password sharing has been in place for a long time, with the streaming giant becoming increasingly tougher from early warnings to subsequent enforcement measures. Although it caused a lot of controversy, this strategy has unexpectedly brought about outstanding results: millions of new subscribers have been added to the platform, and many families that originally shared accounts have begun to add formal paying members, allowing the overall subscription volume to continue to rise.

Netflix may soon require every profile on an account to use a unique email address

According to Netflix’s current regulations, up to five profiles can be created per account, and use is legal as long as these users live in the same household as the account holder. This system once made it easy for family members to share accounts without worrying about mixing viewing records. However, this era of “free sharing within the family” seems to be facing new changes, and Netflix’s next adjustment is aimed at these family personal data.

According to a report by Android Authority, multiple Reddit users reported that Netflix has recently begun requiring users to set up separate email addresses for each profile in their account. In the past, your entire account only required one email address, the one you signed up with; now, whenever you open the Netflix app, you may be prompted to add a unique email address to your profile.

The prompt message reads: “Netflix is about to launch more personalized viewing methods.” and adds: “Add your email address to your profile to make it easier to log in, retrieve your account, get personalized recommendations, and more.” Literally, Netflix regards this as a necessary step to improve the user experience, rather than a simple restriction.

For families living together, this requirement may not be a hassle. Each member of the family usually has their own email address, and adding additional information only takes a few minutes to set up. Although it will allow Netflix to collect more user information, the overall burden is not high.

Those who are really affected are those users who are accustomed to creating multiple profiles to distinguish different viewing purposes. For example, some people create separate profiles for children’s content, binge-watching movies, movie collections, or sports events to maintain the purity of recommended content. In the past, you only needed one set of mailboxes to manage all your information. Now you have to prepare a separate email for each profile, and you may even need to create additional mailboxes to comply with Netflix’s requirements. This undoubtedly increases management costs and inconveniences users who originally relied on multiple profiles to classify content.

It is worth noting that this change does not appear to be fully implemented yet. Some users reported that their accounts were not seeing the notification, indicating that Netflix may still be conducting A/B testing or gradually expanding its scope. Additionally, according to user goodashbadash79, there is still a way to turn off this reminder (at least temporarily):

  • Go to your Netflix account settings page (or visit netflix.com/account).
  • Find the “Security” related settings.
  • Turn off the “Functional Testing” option.

This method should remove the prompt if Netflix hasn’t mandated it yet. But whether it will still be available in the future depends on Netflix’s policy direction.

As Netflix continues to adjust its account system, the platform is gradually moving towards a more detailed and personalized management method. For the average family, this may be a small change; but for multi-account, multi-purpose users, this is another change that needs to be readjusted. It remains to be seen whether Netflix will expand this requirement further.
