Tesla FSD V14 Lite officially launched: Knowledge Distillation brings HW4 FSD capabilities to HW3 older models

Tesla Vice President of AI and Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy officially announced via X (formerly Twitter) on June 29 that FSD V14 Lite has begun to be pushed to Early Access users equipped with HW3 (AI3) hardware. This is the first major FSD feature update that HW3 owners have received in more than 16 months since FSD v12.6 in early 2025.

FSD v14 Lite is now rolling out to AI3 early-access customers. Based on the feedback, will rollout to more customers over the next few weeks.

Elluswamy said in a tweet: “This version refines AI4’s V14 series driving behavior into AI3’s camera and computing architecture. It includes destination options and speed profiles for urban roads, and more importantly, significant improvements in safety.” Tesla expects to expand the rollout to more owners in the coming weeks based on early user feedback.

What is “knowledge distillation”? Core technology of V14 Lite

The software version number of FSD V14 Lite is 2026.20.5.1. The most critical update is the introduction of “Knowledge Distillation” technology. This is an AI model compression method: let a large model with strong computing power (HW4 V14, teacher model) train a streamlined model with weak computing power (HW3 V14 Lite, student model), so that the latter can learn the core judgment ability of the former under limited hardware resources.

The computing power of HW4 is approximately four times that of HW3, which means that HW3 cannot directly execute the full V14 model of HW4. Through knowledge distillation, HW3 does not need to hard-run the full version of the model, but runs a streamlined version “taught by the large model”, which can still achieve behavior quality close to the level of HW4 under limited computing power. IT House reported that Elluswamy emphasized that the “Lite” suffix only refers to the compressed size of the underlying neural network, not a functionally stripped version. The goal of V14 Lite is to achieve functional parity with AI4 vehicles.

Full feature list: more than just security improvements

According to the official version notes and multiple media reports, FSD V14 Lite includes the following core updates:

  • knowledge distillation: Distill the core capabilities of HW4 V14 directly into the HW3 architecture, unlocking enhancements to the reinforcement learning (RL) model and offline inference model that could only be executed on HW4
  • Improved scene processing capabilities: Navigation processing, merging and diverging, pedestrian interaction, signal light recognition, vehicle entry and other scenes have been improved.
  • Improved driving comfort: Reduce unnecessary false deceleration, smoother steering wheel operation, and more stable lane centering
  • Start from Park: Added the function of starting FSD automatic driving directly from the parking space
  • Arrival Options: FSD can be configured to park the vehicle in a parking lot, roadside, driveway or curb at the destination
  • Speed ​​Profiles: Driving style preferences can be adjusted at any time and extended to urban road scenes, no longer limited to specific situations.

Elluswamy also specifically pointed out that HW3 owners can use the function of starting FSD from a parking space without hardware upgrades, and “basically have all the functions of the V14 on HW4.” HW3 owners on X have also tested the automatic parking function at the charging station:

16-month window period: HW3 owners’ long wait

To understand the weight of this news, one has to look back at where U.S. HW3 owners have been for the past year and a half. HW3 vehicles have not received a new major FSD release since the FSD v12.6.4 push in early 2025. Over the past 16 months, Tesla’s FSD R&D resources have been almost entirely concentrated on the HW4 platform. HW4 users have experienced the reinforcement learning improvements, smoother control experience and smarter navigation capabilities brought by the V14 series.

HW3 owners have only received sporadic stability fixes and minor version updates during this period, but the functional gap continues to widen. The push of V14 Lite represents Tesla’s official fulfillment of its promise of “not abandoning HW3 owners.”

This is actually quite rare in the automotive industry. The original Model 3, which was shipped in 2019, is still receiving the latest autonomous driving software updates seven years later. Except for Tesla, almost no car manufacturer can update the self-driving software for models from 10 years ago. This reflects Tesla’s long-term technical layout on the purely visual route and self-developed AI chips.

Gap narrowed but not completely eliminated

The V14 Lite closes the feature gap between the HW3 and HW4, but doesn’t close it entirely. Currently, some complex scenarios that require high computing power (such as complex intersections with multiple traffic flows and identification of extremely severe weather) still have limitations on HW3. The Lite version achieves a “decision-making quality” close to that of HW4 through a distillation mechanism, but there is still a gap between the full version and the processing speed and coverage of edge scenes.

Since this is a distilled version of the full FSD V14, responses may be slightly slower and decision-making may not be as comprehensive as the full version. However, Elluswamy specifically emphasized in his tweet that “security has been significantly improved” rather than simply functional equivalence. This wording choice is worthy of attention. Safety is the most important indicator for regulators, investors and consumers. Using safety as the primary selling point rather than a list of features shows that Tesla has considerable confidence in the safety performance of V14 Lite.

Hardware upgrade is still a long-term solution

Hardware upgrades remain the ultimate path for owners who want the full unsupervised FSD experience. Musk previously promised in an earnings call to upgrade cameras for old car owners or provide additional discounts when trading in new cars. Tesla has also stated that it plans to establish a “mini factory” to assist HW3 owners in hardware upgrades.

However, the significance of V14 Lite is that it allows the majority of HW3 owners to still enjoy the core advancements of the V14 architecture while waiting for hardware upgrades, instead of just staying at the level of v12.6. According to foreign media estimates, Tesla vehicles equipped with HW3 hardware account for a large proportion of the entire fleet. If V14 Lite can bring substantial experience improvements, this will have a positive impact on FSD subscribers’ willingness to renew.

Push schedule and precautions for Taiwanese car owners

At present, V14 Lite will be pushed to early access users in the United States first, and other regions will usually follow up within two to four weeks after the U.S. version is pushed. However, since Taiwan has not yet opened FSD, we can only continue to wait and see whether HW3 owners can use it simultaneously when FSD is fully opened next month (July) or in the legendary September when the policy is passed. It should be noted that if the Model S/X/3 after 2017 is equipped with HW2.5, as long as you purchase FSD, Tesla will replace it with HW3 hardware for free. Therefore, these models are also suitable for V14 Lite, but in theory, they should also be able to be updated to HW4 in the future. It depends on how Tesla officially handles it in the future.
