In an era where everyone has one mobile device, not only can they help find things through anonymous and private methods (yes, we are talking about AirTag and Tile), Google has also used this concept of “one for everyone, everyone for one” mobile phone user network as another earthquake warning function in addition to national warnings, and is the first to enable such a function for Android users in California, USA. At that time, I had friends who were living in active fault zones, and I hoped that this function could be used in other countries. Now, combined with the earthquake detection and warning functions of many Android phones, it is also confirmed that it has officially begun to be pushed to markets outside the United States.

Compared with national-level earthquake forecasting and text message notifications, Google will be able to detect and even predict earthquakes more broadly through its large and global presence of up to 2 billion active Android users and various sensor matching algorithms commonly used in smartphones. It is said that this built-in function of Android will push earthquake warning messages to users in the support area when an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or above is detected. It is hoped that this early notification function can reduce the casualties that may be caused by disasters.
What’s wonderful is that this earthquake detection function built through the user network can also display the estimated earthquake intensity and even the location of the earthquake center. Although this system is indeed connected with government information in the United States, if you think about it carefully, this information does have the opportunity to be generated through big data assisted by location information. At least, this wave of versions launched in Greece and New Zealand are purely sensing with Android phones.
Personally, I guess that the warning function obtained through the mobile phone sensor should be more biased towards mutual verification, so as to confirm the earthquake situation and notify users within the possible range of the earthquake situation. In addition to prompting earthquake information, this function will also prompt corresponding disaster avoidance methods below the message. After the earthquake is over, the system will also ask relevant questions to improve the future performance of this feature.
Now that Android’s built-in earthquake warning system has officially left the United States, and does not necessarily need to be connected with government earthquake information, it should theoretically have a good chance of being pushed to more countries and regions (well, after all, they have not committed to QQ).
