Over the past two years, Google has been continuously adding AI features across most of its products and services. Last year, Google Search and Google Photos received significant AI-driven updates. Gmail, the world’s largest email service with over 3 billion users, is now getting a major AI update. Google announced that Gmail will receive a significant upgrade powered by the Gemini 3 model.

The AI summaries from Google Search have now been ported over to Gmail. When users open a long email thread, AI summaries will consolidate the entire thread into a key overview. Additionally, when users perform natural language searches in their inbox, instead of getting a list of emails as results, they’ll get a simple AI overview response. For example, users can ask “Which hotel did I stay at in New York last year” and get the hotel name as a direct answer.

This new AI-powered email thread summary feature is rolling out for free to all Gmail users starting today, and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can use AI summaries to ask natural language questions.

Google also offers “Help Me Write” and “Smart Reply” features for free to everyone. “Help Me Write” lets users compose emails from scratch with a simple text description, while “Smart Reply” presents relevant, one-tap responses when replying to emails. Additionally, there’s a new proofreading feature for advanced grammar, tone, and style checks, which is also available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Next month, Google will make “Help Me Write” more personalized by incorporating context from other Google apps like Google Drive.

The new AI inbox filter will help users prioritize and identify important emails. For example, Gmail can proactively flag credit card bills due tomorrow or upcoming appointments. Google is now rolling this feature out to trusted testers and will expand it broadly in the coming months.

The new AI features mentioned above are now rolling out in English in the United States, and Google will bring these products to more languages and regions in the coming months.
