Tesla officially launched the six-seater long-wheelbase Model Y L in the US and Puerto Rico in the early hours of July 2, with the launch edition “Launch Series” priced at $61,990 (approximately NT$2.01 million), available for online configuration starting today. US deliveries are expected to begin in October, with the first owners able to pick up their vehicles in Q4. The Model Y L is a long-wheelbase three-row six-seater version of the Model Y, first unveiled in China in August 2025 (starting at approximately $47,000), and subsequently expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asian markets. In April 2026, prototype vehicles were spotted testing on US roads, and now the official US launch has been confirmed. This US release is a Launch Series limited edition featuring Premium AWD configuration, with many exclusive features over the standard Model Y.

Specifications at a glance: 7 inches longer than Model Y

Based on the standard Model Y, the Model Y L has a wheelbase increased by 150mm (about 5.9 inches) to 3,040mm, with overall length extended by approximately 180mm (7 inches) to 4,980mm. All the additional body space is used to accommodate a true third row of seats. It features a 2+2+2 six-seat layout with second-row individual captain chairs equipped with heating, ventilation, electric armrests, and one-touch recline function. The third-row seats also come with heating and electric folding, suitable for adults rather than just children.

Equipment Details: Aligned with Family Needs

The Model Y L features several upgrades designed for family users. The third-row seats come equipped with heating and power folding functions, while the C-pillars on both sides feature air conditioning vents and cup holders. Two sets of LED lighting are installed overhead. The second-row B-pillars now include independent air conditioning vents, allowing rear passengers to quickly adjust the cabin temperature. All seats (first three rows) can fold completely flat, creating a level cargo area, and the rear trunk includes a 12V power outlet for connecting external devices.

The front seats feature electric leg extensions, heating and ventilation, and adjustable headrests, enhancing comfort on long drives. Two 50W wireless charging pads with active cooling are located at the front of the center console, supporting fast charging for two phones simultaneously—a convenient feature for family vehicles. The roof features silver-coated thermal insulation glass that effectively reduces solar heat radiation inside the cabin. Combined with 360-degree soundproof glass and a HEPA air filtration system, cabin quietness and air quality are significantly improved compared to the standard version. RGB ambient lighting throughout the cabin comes standard across all trims and can be customized to preferred colors. The V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) function includes an adapter for powering external devices outdoors, but PowerShare bidirectional charging is not supported.

The suspension system is upgraded to a second-generation continuously variable damping suspension, paired with staggered front and rear tires. Tesla claims it offers better handling and comfort than the standard Model Y. The new car comes standard with 8 cameras, including a front bumper camera with a washer, which is especially useful in Taiwan’s rainy environment. The car has 18 speakers in total (including a subwoofer), and the audio performance shows significant improvement. Price and Competition: Launch Series Premium Strategy

The pricing strategy for Model Y L’s Launch Series has sparked discussion. Analysts originally expected a US price of around $54,000, but Tesla chose to test the waters first with the high-spec Launch Series. This is more expensive than Tesla’s own Model Y Performance, and also higher than the starting prices of two major three-row electric SUV competitors: Kia EV9 (starting at $54,900, with 304 miles of range) and Hyundai Ioniq 9 (starting at $58,955, with 335 miles of range).

However, Tesla has repeatedly used the “Launch Series” limited-edition launch strategy in the past: first releasing a fully-loaded, high-priced version to capture demand, then offering a period of free Supercharging and FSD, plus complimentary color options… as compensation for the premium price, before later opening up more affordable standard models.

Conclusion

The Model Y L fills a clear gap in Tesla’s current lineup: a truly usable three-row electric SUV after the Model X was discontinued. The previous standard Model Y’s third row was merely an “emergency seat” for children with extremely limited legroom. The new Long Range L version adopts a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, making the third row no longer just a decorative afterthought. For American consumers looking to buy an electric family SUV, this is the closest Tesla equivalent to a full-size seven-passenger gas-powered vehicle.

The $61,990 Launch Series pricing is indeed not cheap, but considering the value of FSD and free Supercharging packages, as well as the strong demand in the US three-row SUV market, it remains to be seen how early adopters will respond to the price. What’s more worth watching is when the regular version will launch and where the pricing will land. Following Tesla’s usual pattern, once the Launch Series sells out, the regular Model Y L’s starting price should drop significantly, with the normal selling price likely around $50,000, aligning with the premium logic in the Chinese market. But in Taiwan, it could be around NT$2.2 to 2.5 million. Currently, Tesla Taiwan has not announced any Taiwan launch timeline, and my personal guess is sometime at the end of this year or early next year—friends who are interested can look forward to it.
