Although many parents and the older generation can still speak Hokkien, there are now many young people who cannot speak it at all, or they can only listen to it. However, this is not because young people don’t want to learn, but it is rarely used in life. For those who want to learn or speak more frequently, Google Play actually has such a free app called “Xiong Ai Learn Taiwanese”, which can improve your Hokkien. How to pronounce each commonly used example sentence and what it means in Chinese are clearly written. I recommend it to everyone.
Xiong Ai Learn Taiwanese is an app specially designed for learning Taiwanese.
All content in Xiong Ai Learn Taiwanese is free, and you can start learning as soon as you open the app. If you already know or have learned this Hokkien phrase, swipe left on the screen and it will not appear again in the future. If you don’t understand it well or want to learn it again, swipe right on the screen. Each Minnan sentence has pronunciation, English pinyin and Chinese explanation:
The function selection is at the bottom, and the second one is the theme vocabulary. Currently there are only two: “Long-distance Night Train – Fire Extinguisher” and “Prodigal Son Returns – Eggplant Egg”:
I originally thought that all the lyrics were included, but it seems that there are only a few key Hokkien words. For example, there are only five “liangzi”, “huitou”, “Xun”, “wine” and “Jiao” in the Prodigal Son. This is a bit of a pity. I am not sure whether developers will add more in the future. After you learn 6 Hokkien words, this app also provides a game function to help you review by matching word translation cards (turning out the same Hokkien words and explanations), which I think is quite fun. Judging from the introduction of the app, this one seems to be quite new, so there may not be that many Hokkien vocabulary, but it is enough for people who don’t know much, or only know a little bit, and they are all practical examples.
