Google Maps Launches ‘Ask Maps’ AI Conversational Feature, Gemini-Powered Ushers in Biggest Navigation Upgrade in Over a Decade
Earlier, Google MapsOfficial BlogAnnouncing the launch of “Ask Maps,” a new conversational feature powered by the Gemini model, allowing users to find locations by asking questions in full context—just like chatting with an assistant—instead of relying on traditional keyword searches.
For example, you could ask: “My phone is almost out of battery—is there somewhere I can charge without waiting in a long line at a coffee shop?” Or “Where are the public tennis courts that have lights on tonight?”
Ask Maps will analyze your question and search through its database of over 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors to find the most relevant recommendations. It can even provide personalized suggestions based on places you’ve searched or saved in Maps.
For example, if you usually search for vegetarian restaurants, when you ask for group dining recommendations, Ask Maps might prioritize suggesting places that offer vegan options.
Google says that in the past, these types of questions required users to search for reviews, check business hours, and compare map locations on their own. Now, you just need to tap the Ask Maps button to get conversational answers directly, along with a customized map to help you quickly see what options are available.
Additionally, Ask Maps also supports a “follow-up” feature—for example, if after asking you find the recommended restaurant is too far, you can simply say “Any closer options?” and it will instantly update the recommendations without needing to search again.
Another key update is called “Immersive Navigation,” which is Google Maps’ biggest navigation experience overhaul in over a decade.
The new navigation interface will bring a more immersive 3D view, providing a clearer depiction of surrounding buildings, elevated roads, and terrain variations. When necessary, it will also highlight key road elements such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs, making it easier for drivers to anticipate and make decisions when turning or merging into traffic.
It also added a super handy new feature called “Smart Zooms” — when you encounter a complex intersection or need to change lanes, the map automatically zooms in, even making buildings ahead transparent so you can clearly see where to go next.
Beyond the more three-dimensional display, it now more clearly shows you the trade-offs between different alternative routes — for example, one route is faster but has tolls, while another is slightly slower but less congested. It also provides real-time alerts about unexpected situations like construction and accidents.
The voice navigation has also been upgraded, making it sound more like a real person guiding you. For example, instead of just saying “turn right in 500 meters,” it now uses more conversational language like “pass this exit, then take the next one,” which is more intuitive and easier to understand for drivers.
Additionally, as you approach your destination, it will also use street view to preview the surrounding area and provide parking suggestions, building entrance locations, and reminders about which side of the road to park on.
Currently, these two features are available to different users.
Ask Maps has already started rolling out in the US and India, supporting Android and iOS platforms, with the desktop version to follow soon. Immersive Navigation is currently launching first in the US, and Google says it will expand to more eligible iOS and Android devices over the coming months, while also supporting CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with built-in Google systems.
As for when other countries and regions will be able to use it, Google hasn’t given a clear timeline yet. However, based on Google Maps’ past update patterns, the US usually gets it first, and other major markets tend to follow within a few months. Users in Taiwan may need to wait a bit longer.
