Twitch streamer Joshua Khane complained in a post on the

Microsoft DELETED my account AND OneDrive!!?? After ACKNOWLEDGING that I’m the owner of the account and that it was compromised???

25 fucking years of data, thousands of euros spended on games?? My son’s baby pictures? GONE!

Microsoft account was hacked and customer service deleted the account directly

According to Khane’s description, his Microsoft account was hacked, and the other party changed the account’s rescue information and backup email, making it impossible for him to regain control of the account on his own. He immediately contacted Microsoft customer service for assistance. Microsoft admitted that the account had indeed been accessed without authorization and confirmed that Khane was the original holder of the account. But the subsequent development was beyond his expectation. Microsoft permanently deleted the entire account on the grounds that “security settings have been changed” and called this action “irreversible.”

Khane angrily wrote in the post: “25 years of data, thousands of euros to buy games, my son’s baby photos, all gone! Just because Microsoft can’t recover a stolen account, they just deleted it as if it was nothing.” He also added that he understood that part of the incident was because he did not enable two-step verification, but he believed that Microsoft’s handling was completely unreasonable. Even though he had confirmed that he was the account holder, instead of returning his account, they chose to delete all the data directly.

Scale of losses: Not just games

Khane’s account spans 25 years, beginning in his teenage years and covering the most important phases of his life. This is no ordinary game account. His Microsoft account is bound to a large number of digital services, including OneDrive cloud storage, which contains irrecoverable family memories such as his son’s baby photos. In terms of games, all the digital games he purchased on the Xbox platform over the years have also evaporated. Although in principle it can be re-authorized through a new account, the process is cumbersome and there is no guarantee that all games can be completely transferred.

For many users who rely heavily on the Microsoft ecosystem, this incident highlights an important point: When you entrust all your data and memories to a cloud service, your access rights are completely in the hands of the service provider. If something goes wrong with your account, even if you can prove your identity, you may still lose everything forever. This also caused the outside world to once again discuss the issue of protecting the ownership of digital assets.

Previous example: Brazilian users were compensated

This is not the first case of Microsoft account disputes. according toreportRecently, a Brazilian Xbox user, João Nasser, filed a lawsuit after encountering a similar account theft. In the end, the court ruled that Microsoft must pay about US$400 in mental damages and return the right to access the account. This judgment shows that Microsoft is not without legal responsibility in such incidents, but most users will not choose to take the time to litigate.

Conclusion

Joshua Khane’s experience exposed the systemic flaws of Microsoft’s account recovery mechanism. When hackers change the rescue information, even the original account holder who has confirmed his identity cannot retrieve his account, and instead faces the fate of being directly deleted. As the gaming industry shifts to digital versions and cloud storage, these problems will only become more serious. For ordinary users, the most direct implications of this news are:Enable two-step verification and regularly back up important files in OneDrive to local or other cloud spaces. Because under Microsoft’s current policy, your digital assets may disappear in an instant.
