Musk’s AI startup, not wanting Claude Code and Codex to have all the glory xAI xAI announces the launch of its first AI code agent tool, “Grok Build,” a command-line interface (CLI) designed for professional software engineering and complex coding tasks. Currently available as an early beta version, it’s exclusive to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers at NT$9,900 (US$300) per month. The product’s debut is viewed as a key strategic move for xAI to catch up with rivals Anthropic and OpenAI.
Benchmarked against Claude Code and Grok Build, with a focus on professional engineering needs
According to xAI’s official announcement, Grok Build is described as “a powerful new code agent tool and CLI, designed for professional software engineering, application development, and workflow automation.” The positioning of this tool is similar to what Anthropic introduced Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex Direct competition, all aimed at allowing developers to complete complex code writing, editing, and automation tasks in the terminal without having to switch back and forth between the web interface and terminal.

However, xAI is actually far behind its competitors in terms of progress. Musk had previously admitted that xAI is already lagging behind its rivals in coding capabilities. According to Bloomberg, xAI executives had asked employees to fully catch up to Claude’s performance across various tasks, with reports of executives directly issuing the directive to “make Grok match Claude.” Additionally, with nearly all former co-founders having left the company, Musk stated that he is “rebuilding xAI from scratch,” suggesting the company is facing considerable pressure to restructure internally.

It’s worth noting that Grok Build is currently only available to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers, costing NT$9,900 per month. This price is significantly higher than most AI coding tools on the market (Anthropic Claude Code starts at around NT$660 per month for Pro membership, Codex is also available to Plus members at NT$660 per month, and GitHub Copilot costs around NT$330 per month), clearly targeting top-tier developers and enterprise users. SuperGrok Heavy users can install the beta version through xAI’s official website and log in to their accounts to start using it.
One major highlight of this tool is the “Arena Mode” feature, which allows developers to compete against each other, testing different AI models’ performance on the same task—a bit like a head-to-head “versus” experience between AI models. The tool also emphasizes a “local-first” design, enabling developers to do more comprehensive work on their own machines rather than relying entirely on cloud processing, which theoretically offers better data privacy protection.
Grok has faced ongoing controversies: generating millions of inappropriate images
However, this new product is not without blemishes. Grok has previously faced serious content safety issues. A research report published by UK non-profit organization Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) in January this year found that Grok generated approximately 3 million sexualized images in just 11 days, including 23,000 images involving children. xAI subsequently modified its policies, prohibiting users from “editing images of real people wearing revealing clothing such as swimsuits,” in a belated attempt to address the problem. This controversy has also raised questions about whether Grok Build has adequate safety guardrails in place.

xAI was acquired by Musk’s other company SpaceX in February this year, and the merged company is called “SpaceXAI.” This merger could give xAI an edge with space-based data centers. SpaceX has already applied to the FCC for permission to launch millions of satellites to build orbital data centers, providing unprecedented computing power for AI training. However, the post-merger team is facing a severe brain drain problem. According to reports, since the merger, over 50 researchers and engineers have left, including key personnel responsible for coding and AI training, which is undoubtedly a heavy blow to the continued development of Grok Build.

The launch of Grok Build signals intensifying competition in the AI code agent tool market. Key players currently include Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and GitHub Copilot, among others. Each competitor brings its own strengths: Claude Code is known for security and stability, while Copilot has the backing of GitHub’s vast developer ecosystem. By choosing to enter this crowded market with Grok Build, whether xAI can compete with rivals in technical performance and user trust remains to be seen. What’s certain is that in this fast-moving race, falling behind by even a step can carry incalculable costs—especially when a company is simultaneously grappling with talent drain and product controversies.
