Readers who have been following the tech industry for some time may recall the sharp price surge in the memory market last year, driven by the AI boom and supply chain constraints. However, this months-long price surge appears to have taken an unexpected turn recently. According to the latest market monitoring data, global DDR5 memory prices are experiencing a rare “major crash.” Not only have prices plummeted in the U.S. and Chinese markets, but even the traditionally stable European market has begun to show signs of weakness. Behind this price-drop storm lies not only consumer resistance to high-priced products but also a connection to Google’s newly launched AI algorithm.

Based on the latest market trends, DDR5 memory—which has been in a seller’s market for the past several months—has shown clear signs of price declines since March 2026. Data from German market monitoring indicates that the average price of several DDR5 memory kits fell by 7.2% month-over-month in March, marking the first turning point in price declines since July 2025. This phenomenon is viewed by the industry as an early warning sign of an imbalance in market supply and demand, catching investors and speculators—who had originally expected prices to continue rising—off guard.

Major Brands Lead the Decline: Corsair’s Avenger Series Sees a Staggering Drop in Price

Amid this wave of price cuts, the moves by Corsair, a world-renowned memory brand, have drawn the most attention. The prices of its VENGEANCE series DDR5 memory kits on U.S. e-commerce platformsA significant downward revision occurred. The high-end 32GB, 6400MHz model has dropped from its recent peak of $490 all the way down to $379.99, a decline of as much as $110 (about 22%) for a single unit.

In addition, the price of the more entry-level 16GB, 5200MHz model has dropped from $260 to $219.99. Market observers note that while the current price cuts are primarily concentrated among a few specific manufacturers—rather than being a widespread industry-wide trend—they undoubtedly represent the first “positive signal” in months against the backdrop of long-standing supply shortages, indicating that manufacturers are adjusting their inventory strategies to respond to the evolving market environment.

Chinese Market in Turmoil: Wholesalers Lament, “Prices Have Collapsed”

Compared to the steady price declines in the European and American markets, the Chinese market has been more volatile and chaotic. Looking back at price trends over the past year, taking mainstream 16GB 3200MHz memory as an example, the market price in May of last year was around 130 yuan. Subsequently, driven by various factors, it surged to a peak of 980 yuan in December of last year—a truly staggering increase.

However, this upward trend came to an abrupt halt in late March. As of March 27, the price of the same model had quickly fallen back to around 700 yuan. A front-line wholesaler revealed that, starting last Saturday, “Prices just crashed“, with the single-day drop surprisingly exceeding 100 yuan. This precipitous decline triggered panic selling among grassroots distributors, and many “outsiders” who had been hoarding inventory in anticipation of a price rise rushed to exit the market, further exacerbating market instability.

A Convergence of Factors: The Chain Reaction of Shrinking Demand and a Wave of Sell-offs

The sharp drop in DDR5 prices is not due to a single factor, but rather the result of multiple market dynamics acting in concert. First is the reality of “shrinking demand.” Because prices had risen excessively in the recent past, users with non-essential needs generally chose to adopt a wait-and-see approach, refusing to enter the market at peak prices. Data shows that compared to last November, sales in the end-user market have fallen by more than 60%, indicating a severe lack of market absorption capacity.

Second, the large number of speculators who flooded the market during last year’s price surge have now become a “time bomb.” These non-professionals, who entered the market to hoard memory chips in response to rising prices, triggered a wave of panic selling when prices began to soften. However, due to strong wait-and-see sentiment among end consumers, there were not enough buyers in the market to absorb the sold-off inventory, causing prices to plummet.

Google’s TurboQuant Algorithm: The Memory-Saver of the AI Era?

Aside from market supply and demand, technological innovations may be the “driving force behind the scenes” that suppliers fear the most. Google’s recently launched KV cache compression algorithm, “TurboQuant,” has sent shockwaves through the industry. According to technical documentation released by Google, the algorithm can reduce the memory requirements of AI workloads by up to six times.

The emergence of this technology directly challenges the market consensus that “AI development will inevitably drive unlimited growth in memory demand” (although, to be honest, AI requires HBM, which has little to do with consumer-grade DDR5; the hype is more closely related to capacity crowding). If companies can reduce their reliance on hardware memory by optimizing algorithms, then future demand for high-bandwidth, high-capacity memory is expected to be significantly revised downward. In response to this news, the combined market capitalization of major DRAM suppliers such as Micron evaporated by hundreds of billions of dollars in a short period, and the investment community has begun to question the memory industry’s long-term profitability.

Industry Warning: The Crisis May Have Only Just Begun

Industry experts are largely adopting a cautious, wait-and-see attitude toward the current downward price trend. In fact, as early as December 2025, Team Group issued a warning that the price crisis in the memory market would worsen further in 2026. Although the current price drop is good news for consumers, whether this means prices will continue to fall remains to be seen, depending on market reactions and the rate at which algorithms like Google TurboQuant gain traction in practical applications.

However, the global DRAM supply chain is still facing severe bottlenecks, and production costs have not declined significantly. If algorithmic technologies can truly be implemented and become widespread in the future, significantly alleviating supply pressures, this might prompt the memory market to return to rational pricing; however, if this is merely a short-term panic, prices could still rebound once inventory is cleared. (Personally, I hope those bastards hoarding stock to drive up prices get crushed by the price drop.)
