WWDC 2026 may have wrapped up on June 13, but the technical shockwaves it unleashed are still reverberating. In the closing demo of Apple’s “Apple Intelligence & Xcode Revealed: Special Session,” LM Studio partnered with Apple to successfully run the full 1 trillion-parameter Kimi K2.6 model locally on four Mac Studios, with secure remote access between MacBook Neo and iPhone achieved via LM Link.

This technology enables direct memory read/write between multiple Macs with microsecond-level latency, significantly reducing cross-node communication overhead and making distributed inference possible.

This means developers no longer need expensive datacenter-grade GPU servers—they can simply chain together a few Mac Studios to deploy massive models locally that were previously only accessible through cloud APIs. Compared to enterprise GPU clusters like NVIDIA H200 or AMD MI350, which easily cost millions of Taiwan dollars to deploy, a Mac Studio-based cluster offers a more flexible entry point. While a single node’s raw compute power doesn’t match that of dedicated GPU servers, the unified memory architecture eliminates the VRAM bottleneck of traditional GPUs, making it possible to load and run inference on extremely large models.

Kimi K2.6: Open-Source Hybrid Reasoning Model with 1 Trillion Parameters

The Kimi K2.6 used in this demo is an open-source model released by the Chinese AI team Moonshot AI on April 20, 2026. As an upgraded version of the Kimi K2 series, K2.6 adopts a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture with Hybrid Thinking design, showing significant improvements in code generation, long-horizon task execution, and Agent collaboration.

Kimi K2.6 supports a maximum context length of 256K tokens and requires approximately 610GB of storage at full precision, even needing over 350GB even after 2-bit quantization dynamic compression. This is why 4 high-end Mac Studios are needed for smooth operation: each Mac Studio M3 Ultra comes with up to 512GB of unified memory, and 4 units combined can reach over 2TB, perfectly meeting the deployment requirements of these extremely large models.

LM Link: Take your model wherever you go

In addition to local cluster computing, LM Studio also demonstrated simultaneously LM Link Through end-to-end encrypted connections, users can securely access large models running on Mac Studio remotely from MacBook Neo or even iPhone. This feature has launched with LM Studio’s iPhone app, allowing developers to use their personal models on the go without uploading sensitive data to the cloud. Industry Watch: The Local AI Era of “Private Frontier-Class Computing”

LM Studio positioned the showcase in their post as “A glimpse of your own private, frontier-scale AI.” This sentence highlights a significant turning point the AI industry is experiencing: until now, the computational power of frontier models has been locked in cloud data centers, requiring users to send their data to external servers to get the best results.

For WWDC, we worked with Apple to run Kimi K2.6, a 1T-parameter model, across a cluster of four Mac Studios using a preview version of LM Studio.

Apple’s choice to partner with third-party tools like LM Studio, which focuses on local inference, rather than simply showcasing its own models, sends a clear strategic signal: Apple believes the future of AI lies not just in cloud APIs, but also in powerful local computing infrastructure. Combined with the Apple Foundation Models framework and Core AI framework introduced at WWDC 26, developers will be able to choose between local and cloud computing paths more flexibly.
