YouTube Music lyrics feature now requires paid subscription

After months of testing and small-scale experiments, YouTube Music seems to have officially begun rolling out its new policy of “paying for lyrics” globally. Viewing song lyrics used to be free for everyone, but now the feature is included with a YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium subscription.

When this change is pushed to your account, you’ll see a new reminder card in the Now Playing interface that says “You have x views left” and “Upgrade to Premium to unlock full lyrics.” In other words, users can only view the lyrics of five songs for free before subscribing, and they can only see the first few lines. The rest of the content will be blurred and cannot be scrolled or read in full.

Google actually started testing this restriction a few months ago, and at that time it only appeared in some regions and on some accounts. Today, judging from the returns from more and more users, the lyrics paywall is no longer an experiment, but a formal strategy for full promotion. To continue using the full lyrics feature, users must subscribe to YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium. In Taiwan, YouTube Music Premium costs NT$169 per month and provides ad-free playback, background playback, offline downloads, and recently added AI features such as Ask Music. The more expensive YouTube Premium (NT$199 per month) extends these benefits to the entire YouTube platform, including ad-free video playback, background playback, and a more complete cross-platform experience.

This change is not a standalone event, but part of Google’s larger subscription strategy. Just earlier this week, when Google announced its latest financial report, it mentioned that its consumer services (including Google One, YouTube Premium, etc.) have accumulated more than 325 million paid subscriptions, showing that the growth of the subscription business is quite strong. In 2025, YouTube’s advertising and subscription revenue will exceed US$60 billion, becoming one of Google’s most important revenue sources.

Against this background, YouTube Music incorporates lyrics into paid content, apparently hoping to further increase subscription conversion rates. The lyrics function may seem simple, but it is an interface element that many users highly rely on when listening to songs. For users who are accustomed to reading lyrics while listening, this restriction will undoubtedly increase the incentive to upgrade to Premium. Although some users are dissatisfied with this change and believe that lyrics should be a basic feature, from Google’s perspective, this is a natural extension to enhance subscription value and increase revenue. As more AI features are added to YouTube Music, the platform may continue to adjust the boundaries between free and paid content in the future. At present, payment for lyrics has appeared in many places around the world. If your account has not been affected yet, it may have just not been pushed to you yet. It can be expected that this policy will eventually become the standard setting of YouTube Music and further change users’ listening habits and payment models.
