Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the global crises that have occurred in history actually happened around us? Today I want to introduce a very special and striking website, 《Outrider》, this is dedicated to raising public awareness of “Climate change” and “Nuclear weapons threata nonprofit educational platform focused on… Unlike dry data reports or dull academic articles, Outrider’s defining feature is its highly visually impactful “interactive simulation tools.” The site’s most famous nuclear explosion simulator lets you enter any landmark in the world or your own address and directly simulate, on a 3D map, the affected areas and destructive power of different nuclear weapons explosions; at the same time, through beautifully designed visualization maps, it presents the real impact of climate change on Earth’s environment. This is not just a popular science website, but an alarm bell that turns abstract global issues into firsthand experience, awakening our deep reflection on the future of the Earth and humanity:
Introduction to the Outrider Website
You can find the nuclear explosion simulator we’re introducing today on Outrider’s official website. Since it’s buried somewhat deep, I’ve split the URL into two links. Readers interested in climate change and nuclear weapons information can go directly to Outrider’s official website:
It’s also very simple to use: just enter the area where you want to simulate a nuclear explosion in the search box. Here, I’ll use Taiwan as an example:
If you allow the website to access your location, it will detect your region directly and simulate accordingly:
It will then jump to the specified location and state what would happen if a nuclear explosion occurred in that area?
Since the website has no Chinese language version, I translated the webpage directly into Chinese so readers can read it more easily. Through the simulated nuclear explosion setup, you can roughly understand,When nuclear weapons of different yields are detonated,How horrifying the scale of destruction and the extent of casualties caused:
If it were detonated directly in the air, the affected area would be even larger:
The system includes a variety of historically famous nuclear bombs and modern weapon options, from World War II Hiroshima’s “Little Boy” (about 15 kilotons) and the Cold War-era former Soviet “Tsar Bomba” (50,000 kilotons) to active nuclear warheads from various countries—all freely switchable:
In modern history, the use of nuclear weapons in war occurred only in 1945, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan, prompting Japan’s surrender. Although there has been no record of nuclear weapons being used again in subsequent wars, countries still develop nuclear weapons to build military deterrence and maintain a balance of terror among major powers. Whether future wars will escalate into nuclear war is something we cannot know. However, by transforming cold, abstract military data into visceral map visualizations, people can directly feel the destructive power of nuclear weapons, which also highlights the urgency of preserving peace and promoting denuclearization:
Summary
Outrider uses an intuitive interactive map to visualize abstract, enormous data on the power of nuclear weapons and climate change, allowing users to see firsthand the shocking scenes of disaster arriving in their own surroundings. It is not merely a science communication tool, but also a warning bell that illuminates humanity’s future, reminding us that behind seemingly peaceful everyday life, destructive threats have never been far away. Only by deeply understanding the destructive power of these crises can we more actively reflect on the value of denuclearization and environmental protection, and together safeguard our only Earth. The website also features many related topics such as nuclear weapons information, nuclear weapons history, and climate change… If you are also interested in these topics, you might want to learn more through this website:
