Capcom’s 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake led players to revisit this classic with modern technology. Although the game’s story focuses on the individual survival adventures of Leon and Claire, neither the original nor the remake included any two-player co-op elements—but now, a player-made mod is set to change that.

Amazingly, this brand-new mod created by creator Shopcreeper01 “Local Couch Co-opIt is not simply adding an NPC that follows the player around, but transforming Resident Evil 2 Remake into a true two-player co-op game, letting another player control Hunk and other characters from the Resident Evil series.
During gameplay, both players each have their own independent aiming controls, inventory, weapons, item pickup, HUD interface, and flashlight. They can even exchange supplies with each other or provide rescue after one player goes down, and when both players are down at the same time, the game enters a Game Over screen.
However, for now, this mod only supports local connection and split-screen play, and it cannot find teammates through an online connection. In addition, single players can also choose to have AI control their teammates. To install this mod, players must own the Steam version of Resident Evil 2 Remake and use REFramework for it to work properly.

On the other hand, the mod designers are also currently adding some experimental modes to the mod, such as an experimental gameplay mode inspired by Capcom’s 2026 new game Pragmata, which lets two players control a single character at the same time, with one responsible for movement and the other for shooting.
In addition, according to Shopcreeper01, the reason he designed this mod for Resident Evil 2 Remake was actually that he hoped to help his wife deal with some horror games she was too afraid to play. But in fact, this kind of two-player co-op gameplay had already appeared in multiple entries in the series; aside from spin-offs such as Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil: Revelations 2, even the mainline titles Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 made two-player co-op a key feature.

Although Capcom has never officially given a definitive answer, players have wondered for years whether there might be a chance to see Resident Evil 5 receive a full remake as well, especially since the development team did plant a hint related to Wesker, the main villain of Resident Evil 5, at the end of the Resident Evil 4 DLC. And if Capcom does indeed have such plans internally, how they would recreate the game’s two-player co-op gameplay would also be a major focus.
As of now, players can expect two projects from the series in 2027: a Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake and story DLC for Resident Evil 9: Requiem. Beyond that, other rumors suggest remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1 are also planned, and even the next mainline entry, Resident Evil 10, is seemingly already in development.
