On September 30, HTC subsidiary G REIGNS announced that it had partnered with Mongolian telecom operator Mobicom and MTI to complete a 5G SA Open RAN live network deployment in Mongolia. The collaboration moved validation that had previously stayed in the lab into real rural settings, with stable coverage at distances of up to about 7 kilometers, a connection success rate of over 99%, and equipment that continued to operate through the Mongolian winter. This is a continuation of the same group moving from U.S. sites to Mongolian sites under the U.S. NTIA grant framework.

G REIGNS is responsible for the CU and DU platforms and system integration for 5G Open RAN, and also incorporates network management and performance optimization functions; MTI provides outdoor high-performance radio equipment to meet wide-area coverage and FWA requirements; Mobicom, leveraging its long-term experience in building and operating networks in Mongolia, is responsible for local site deployment, testing, and network tuning. Through a cross-border, multi-vendor combination, the three parties are validating Open RAN’s stability and deployment capabilities in a real network environment.
Unlike the traditional approach, in which a single equipment vendor handles the entire network, Open RAN uses open interfaces to let telecom operators mix and match equipment from different suppliers according to market and site-specific needs. For markets like Mongolia—vast in territory, with a dispersed population and limited infrastructure conditions in some areas—this allows network architecture to be planned according to actual needs while retaining flexibility for future expansion.
From Lab Validation to Live Networks
This Mongolia deployment did not come out of nowhere. In June this year, G REIGNS and MTI, together with U.S. Alaska communications service provider Microcom, completed system integration and laboratory validation of an end-to-end Open RAN solution, and at the time indicated that the next step was to move to field trials. The Mongolia case applies the same division of labor to a harsher live-network environment: low population density, wide-area coverage, and severe cold.
Both projects fall under the U.S. NTIA Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund NOFO2 program, which aims to advance open, interoperable, secure, and deployment-flexible wireless network solutions. G REIGNS’s positioning aligns with this: as an HTC subsidiary, it provides 5G RAN solutions compatible with O-RAN open interfaces and supporting cloud-native vRAN, focuses on baseband unit software development and optimization, and works with partners ranging from core systems and servers to radio manufacturers.
As 5G Advanced evolves toward 6G, AI-native capabilities, open architecture, softwareization, and multi-vendor interoperability are becoming the main pillars of next-generation communications. For G REIGNS, the Mongolia project represents accumulated deployment experience across countries, climates, and operating conditions; the three parties also stated they will continue to collaborate to expand applications in rural broadband, FWA, and other specialized communications scenarios.
