Google upgrades Android transfer tool to make it easier for iPhone users to switch jobs

Switching from iPhone to Android has always been regarded as a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Incomplete data, settings have to be redone, and some content cannot be transferred at all. These problems have deterred many users from cross-platform. Google decided to completely overhaul this experience in Android 17, launching a redesigned Android Switch, which it claims is the most complete and smoothest cross-platform migration solution in Android history.

This update is not just a functional enhancement, but a new transmission system built from the ground up in cooperation with Apple. Together, the two companies address past limitations on data access on iOS, allowing more information to be wirelessly and securely transferred to Android devices. This capability has begun to be rolled out to eligible Pixel devices, and Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 also support it directly through Smart Switch, right out of the box.

The biggest problem with the iPhone to Android migration process in the past was that it was “incomplete”. Although some data can be transferred through Wi‑Fi, the closed design of iOS means that many important contents, such as passwords, pass keys, some files or system settings, must rely on data lines to move. Even if a data cable is used, there is still a lot of information that cannot be transferred, forcing users to spend a lot of time resetting the new phone, from the alarm clock to the home screen layout, having to manually rebuild it.

The new system of Android 17 makes cross-platform migration truly “complete” for the first time. Users can now move wirelessly:

  • Installed applications
  • Passwords and Passkeys
  • SMS and call history
  • Files and Downloads
  • Main screen layout
  • eSIM profile

In the past, these items were of a type that was difficult to cross-platform, especially eSIM and password data. Being able to wirelessly transfer means that users can return to their original usage almost immediately after changing phones. Google has also added details such as alarm clocks, call logs, and downloaded files that were lacking in the earlier version, making the overall migration process closer to “one-click completion.” The only thing that’s still listed as “coming soon” is photo album-related content, and Google says it’s in the final stages of integration with Apple.

This upgraded migration tool is one of the core features of Android 17 and has begun to be rolled out to the Pixel 8 series and newer models. Samsung’s next-generation foldable phones Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 are also supported simultaneously and integrated into Smart Switch, allowing users to use them directly when setting up the phone for the first time. When your Android device is eligible and you select “Copy data from iPhone” during the setup process, the system will pop up a QR Code. After scanning, a new cross-platform transfer process can be started. There is no need to download additional apps or prepare data cables. Google said that more Android devices will be supported in the coming months, but the complete push schedule has not yet been announced.

This update to Android 17 means that Google is actively shortening the switching barrier between iOS and Android. For users, cross-platform is no longer a “big project” that requires mental preparation, but a natural process that can be completed in a short time. For the entire ecosystem, this also symbolizes that the cooperation between the two major platforms in data portability has entered a new stage, making phone replacement no longer a high wall between brands, but a freer choice.
