According to Bloomberg reporter Mark GurmanLatest reports, Apple is planning to significantly change the integration strategy of Siri and AI services in the upcoming iOS 27 system. The tech giant will open up Siri to support third-party AI chatbots, breaking its exclusive partnership with OpenAI ChatGPT since 2024.
Extensions system: Siri transforms into an AI platform
The new mechanism in the report, called “Extensions” (extensions), will allow users to freely choose AI services to be connected with Siri on iPhone, iPad and Mac. According to the description in the beta version of the system: “Extensions allow AI agents of installed applications to work with Siri, Siri applications, and other features on the device.”
This means that in the future, users who download applications such as Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Amazon Alexa, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity or xAI Grok from the App Store will be able to call these AI services directly in the Siri interface without opening additional individual apps.
Works similar to existing ChatGPT integration
In use, this feature will be similar to the existing ChatGPT integration. Users need to explicitly specify which AI platform they want to use to handle the query, such as “Ask Claude” or “Ask Gemini.” The system will guide users to a dedicated area of the App Store to download and enable additional AI services.
It’s worth noting that this Extensions mechanism is separate from another collaboration between Apple and Google. According to reports, Apple still plans to use Google’s Gemini AI model to enhance Apple Intelligence functions and some Siri features, which is different from the operating logic of the Extensions system that allows third-party chatbots to directly provide services.
WWDC 2026 is expected to be officially announced
Apple has announced that this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held from June 8 to 12, where the company is expected to reveal the full features of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. If development progresses smoothly, this Extensions system is expected to be officially launched with the new operating system in the fall.
The shift marks an important adjustment in Apple’s AI strategy. The company has been relatively cautious in its deployment of AI capabilities since the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024, and its exclusive partnership with OpenAI has prompted talk of limited choices. Opening Siri to support multiple AI services not only provides users with more choices, but also makes iPhone more flexible in a market with increasingly fierce AI competition.
