In recent years, the Vlogging equipment market has been dominated by DJI’s Osmo Pocket series, with rival Insta360 also continuing to approach. Now the traditional camera manufacturer Canon has officially joined the fray. Canon disclosed a new gimbal camera patent at the end of April 2026. The design direction is directed towards DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and Insta360 Luna Ultra, which has attracted great attention from the imaging equipment industry.

Patented design: automatic folding, smart power management

According to Canon’s patent, this patent is not simply about stacking hardware specifications, but focuses on the two directions of “durability” and “smart power management.” Patent documents show that Canon is envisioning aIntegrated three-axis gimbal camera, the form is quite mature: it includes three major elements: handle, screen, and stable gimbal head. The biggest difference from most products on the market is that this device is equipped withmagnetic sensor arrayandimage analysis system, can automatically determine whether the user has finished shooting, and automatically complete the safe folding action before turning off the motor.

what does that mean? This patent means that the gimbal will not “collapse” as soon as the power is cut off, like some equipment, and can effectively reduce mechanical wear and tear during long-term use. For creators who often carry it with them and shoot frequently, the increased durability is undoubtedly a major attraction. (In fact, DJI’s Pocket series also has it, but it will become soft soon after the power is turned off)

Face to face with DJI and Shadow Stone

Since its launch in 2019, the DJI Osmo Pocket series has become synonymous with gimbal cameras. The fourth-generation product Osmo Pocket 4 is equipped with a 1-inch sensor, which has significantly improved image quality and stability, and the price is relatively high-end. The challenger Insta360 Luna Ultra is reported to use a dual-lens design, a 1-inch sensor, and support 8K recording, targeting the high-end Vlog market. This new machine is rumored to be co-tuned by Leica, and its specifications are quite threatening.

Canon has currently submitted at least three patents related to the Osmo Pocket type gimbal camera, and the patent documents describe the software logic, magnetic sensor and motor power-off process in very detail, which means Canon may have begun to enter the market.Pre-production engineering stage. However, if Canon’s new product only has the “smart folding” design as a highlight, can it really beat DJI and ShadowStone’s more topical “dual lenses” or “8K video recording” and other dazzling specifications in terms of functionality? This is still unknown.
