Qualcomm’s latest ARM processor, the Snapdragon X Elite, is the latest talk of the tech world for good reason, and Windows on Arm, undeterred by 12 years of unsuccessful attempts, is taking a big step in the right direction. Snapdragon X Elite appears to be the long-awaited chip that could allow Windows PCs to re-compete with Apple’s excellent Macs and MacBooks in terms of performance, energy efficiency, and battery life, while delivering that all-important affordability.

The launch of Snapdragon X Elite has undoubtedly dropped a shock bomb on the laptop market. Some macOS users will naturally wonder if now is the right time to switch to a Windows device, but do the Snapdragon X Elite and Microsoft’s Copilot+ offer Mac users enough value to make the switch? The answer is not quite yet.
A giant leap forward for Windows on ARM
While Apple’s M-series chip-based laptops are unparalleled in many ways, over the past few years, more and more consumers have become skeptical of the company’s products and are instead targeting creative professionals willing to spend big bucks on high-end devices. Meanwhile, others are frustrated that there are still a handful of music production and design apps and plug-ins that don’t run natively or aren’t properly supported on Mac, and are looking to see if there are better options for Windows.
Microsoft’s 12-year effort to make Windows on ARM a suitable replacement for Intel and AMD Unfortunately, emulators can’t make up for this either, especially considering Apple’s Rosetta emulator seems to have accomplished this effortlessly.
However, things are looking up with the launch of the Snapdragon X Elite, whose benchmarks are showing a lot of promise. A far cry from the disappointing results left behind by the Snapdragon 8cx chipset, this ARM SoC has proven itself powerful enough to surpass Intel’s much-hyped Core 7 Ultra 155H, and goes head-to-head with Apple’s M2 Max and M3 in terms of performance. Microsoft’s Snapdragon X Elite-powered Copilot+ PCs focus on power and also hope to compete with the latest MacBook’s long battery life.
In addition, Snapdragon is used in many high-end Windows laptops, from Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, to popular models from major OEMs such as Dell, Lenovo and Samsung, providing consumers with more choices. With all this in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more mainstream utility apps running natively on Windows on ARM in the near future, or at least, that’s Microsoft’s promise.
Much better, but not quite as good
Still, the reality is that Windows on ARM is still a long way from truly being on the same level as the latest Macs and MacBooks want to be. There are a few other things to consider before switching from Mac to Copilot+ PC. If you’re a big fan of macOS’s seamless interface and experience, you may find the Windows UI relatively clunky and cumbersome, especially now that it’s filled with ads and focused on gathering data. Additionally, it’s still unknown when some of the most popular apps will become native, and creatives will likely have to wait a while until their preferred apps run natively and are optimized for Windows on ARM. Adobe promised earlier this year that its entire suite of apps, including Premiere Pro, would be upgraded for ARM in July.
According to tests by foreign media XDA Developers, Snapdragon X Elite is better than MacBook Air M2 in both single-core and multi-core performance. However, according to The Verge reports, after digging deeper, many found that the integrated GPU on the Snapdragon X Elite was lacking compared to the integrated GPU on Apple’s M-series chips. While there has been a lot of hype surrounding the chip’s NPU and its promise of impressive AI experiences for creative work, these Copilot+ laptops are primarily focused on productivity, with Apple positioning its products as creative workstations, and impressive performance when handling creative work is why many users continue to buy and use Apple machines. Those hoping for a Windows on ARM alternative for video editing or 3D design may be disappointed.
There is also the issue of power efficiency. Apple’s latest SoC series, the M3 series, offers up to 22 hours of battery life (up to 18 hours on MacBook Air). Despite the promise of improved power efficiency, the Snapdragon
Price remains an important factor
Consumers looking for a more affordable MacBook alternative may be able to find something attractive in the Snapdragon X series, especially if their daily routine doesn’t typically involve heavy graphics tasks. For the same price as the MacBook Air M2, the cheapest and most accessible MacBook Air on the market today, you can get the latest Surface Laptop 7 with a 10-core processor, double the RAM and storage. Even the new, higher-end Dell XPS 13 with a 12-core processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD is cheaper than the MacBook Air M2 with the same RAM and storage.
The difference in price and value is enough to make MacBook fans on a budget jump ship.
For heavy graphics workloads, Mac still dominates
Users whose daily work involves graphics-heavy tasks (such as video editors, graphic designers, and 3D animators) may need more graphics power from Qualcomm Adreno, the Snapdragon X Elite’s integrated GPU. As we mentioned before,Testing by The VergeIt shows that existing Snapdragon X Elite models are not yet able to keep up with the more powerful Apple M3 iGPU.
While many applications can run natively on Windows on ARM, not all are currently optimized for it. Even Adobe Premiere Pro, one of the most used video editing software on the market, is still optimized for it. If they’re still working on this new platform, imagine how many of their most famous apps are yet to be optimized for ARM. Even though Microsoft has been promising emulation software that’s as good as Apple’s, it’s still not efficient when it comes to handling more demanding apps.
Then there’s the issue of battery life. We haven’t seen any Snapdragon X Elite laptops achieve the 18 hours of battery life achieved by the M3 MacBook in real-world testing. That’s not to say these Copilot+ laptops don’t deliver the advertised all-day battery life, because they do. However, that extra 3 to 8 hours of time difference (depending on the laptop model) can mean a lot to many creative professionals.
There is no doubt that Snapdragon X Elite is a positive development for Microsoft in the process of competing with Apple and finally realizing Windows on ARM. However, those looking to switch from a MacBook to a Microsoft Copilot+ laptop should reconsider, as it’s not quite there yet, so they can wait and see.
