iOS 18 hidden secret: Use the T9 number keys to search for contacts by typing

Although in the iOS 18 beta version of the phone application released after the WWDC 2024 conference, you can’t find the function to record phone calls. However, foreign media MacRumors did share some interesting functional improvements in the developer preview version.
It can be seen that the “Number Keyboard” function of the iPhone phone app has always had an English interface marked on the number keys. After coming to iOS 18, it can already be used as the T9 English input function.
This function basically allows you to quickly enter the most relevant contacts to contact them by referring to the English on the keyboard.
Taking my name Ross as an example, this function will use “7677” to quickly find contacts with English names composed of these numeric keyboards. As before, it will be synchronized to confirm whether the entered number is related to the contact.
And if the information you enter has too wide a range of possibilities, you can click on the second line of information in “Other… People” to switch to a screen similar to a contact list for selection – there is still a numeric keyboard at the bottom.

Foreign media also shared the details of the revision of the phone app. I found that when entering an unknown phone number, the text “Join” was displayed in the past. Now, when a missing number is detected, a contact icon with a plus sign will be displayed. After clicking, you can directly choose two different options: “Add Contact” and “Add to Existing Contact” as before.
