Google today released a major annual update to the Android ecosystem, officially announcing Android’s move from a traditional operating system (Operating System) to an intelligent system (Intelligence System). Gemini Intelligence will become a core competency and be deeply integrated into mobile phones, tablets, watches, and vehicle systems. This update covers many innovations such as AI automation, cross-device integration, creator tools, in-car entertainment and navigation, and more.

Google announces a major Android upgrade: Gemini Intelligence is fully introduced, Android 17 and the new Googlebook in-vehicle system are unveiled simultaneously

Android evolves into a smart system: Gemini becomes the core engine

Google said that with the rapid maturity of AI technology, the role of Android is changing from a simple operating platform to an intelligent system that can actively assist users. Gemini Intelligence will deliver a more personal, proactive, and productive experience on Android devices. Gemini not only answers questions, but also completes tasks directly, including creating shopping lists, booking fitness classes, ordering event tickets, and even reading travel DMs to automatically find eligible itineraries on Expedia. All operations are performed in the app authorized by the user and will stop immediately after the task is completed.

Starting in late June, Gemini will also be built into Chrome to help with form filling, event planning, and searching for out-of-stock items. Google also launched a smarter Autofill, which can automatically fill in cumbersome fields such as passport numbers and driver’s license information.

Rambler: Gboard’s new voice input revolution

Google has released a new voice input technology, Rambler, built into Gboard, which can organize spoken content into complete sentences, automatically remove auxiliary words, and understand the user’s temporary changes in speech. Rambler supports multi-lingual mixed input, and can adjust formats and add emojis on the fly. It is described by Google as “reinventing the keyboard.”

Create My Widget: Generative UI comes to the home screen

Users only need to describe the information they want to track, and Gemini will automatically generate exclusive gadgets. Gemini will continue to update in the background, allowing users to grasp the latest information with just one swipe, such as:

  • Weekend activities for toddlers
  • Red Rocks Concert Ticket Prices and Last Deals
  • Lifestyle information (such as Fahrenheit temperature conversion)

Android 17: Comprehensive upgrade of imaging, creation, and expression

Android and Instagram have in-depth cooperation to bring image upgrades such as Ultra HDR, native anti-shake, night shot mode, and improve the loading speed of Reels and Stories. Google said that the quality of videos shot and uploaded by Android flagship phones has reached or exceeded competing products.

Creator tools have also been upgraded, including:

  • Screen Reactions: Record screen and reactions simultaneously, no green screen or editing required
  • Smart Enhance: Repair old photos and blurry videos with one click
  • Audio track separation: automatically separate wind, music, and vocals

Adobe Premiere is also coming to Android this summer, with templates designed specifically for YouTube Shorts.

In addition, Google has redrawn nearly 4,000 Emoji, which will be first launched on Pixel, Gboard, YouTube, and Gmail.

Digital health and cross-device experience upgrades

Google launches Pause Point to help users avoid unintentional scrolling. Users can mark the app as “easily distracted”, and when they click it, a brief pause screen will pop up and provide options such as breathing exercises, photo browsing, or limited use.

In terms of cross-device interoperability, Quick Share and AirDrop support will be expanded; even if the device does not support it, peer-to-peer file transfer will be possible through WhatsApp. The new mobile phone transfer process can wirelessly move apps, photos, passwords and home screen layouts, and will be launched first on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel this year.

Android Auto and Google Built‑in: A comprehensive upgrade of the in-car experience

The new Android Auto features a UI that adapts to various screen shapes and supports Material You style sync. Google Maps launches its biggest update in a decade, adding 3D building, terrain and lane information. In terms of audio-visual entertainment, Android Auto supports 60fps HD videos for the first time, can automatically switch to audio mode while driving, and also supports Dolby Atmos.

Gemini will also enter the car, automatically reading messages and providing suggested responses, and even assisting with ordering food.
