Have you ever looked at a full page of a foreign language PDF file and found it difficult to read? Microsoft Edge can now read and translate PDF files. You can select a piece of text and have it translated or read aloud for you. However, the existing implementation is not up to standard, which is why Microsoft is testing and improving this feature. Microsoft has launched at least two new features for the Windows version of Microsoft Edge to improve user experience.
Microsoft Edge PDF reader for Windows has upgraded language detection and added full-page translation function
There are some new features newly discovered in the latest Canary channel of Microsoft Edge for Windows. These feature IDs are msPdfLanguageDetection and msFullPdfTranslate. Foreign media Windows Latest tried to force enable these features in Edge Canary, but they currently do not work. Nonetheless, the msPdfLanguageDetection feature ID can solve existing problems with text translation in PDF files. The Translate feature is useful when you want to translate an English document into another language. When trying to highlight a piece of text in another language, this feature can detect the language or its content, but will produce some garbled characters. Therefore, msPdfLanguageDetection can solve the problem of the language not being detected when opening the file for the first time.
The second function, msFullPdfTranslate, can bring full-page translation capabilities to the browser. Currently, you can only translate up to 3000 characters at a time, below which these features will work. The full PDF translation feature will remove this limitation so that instead of highlighting a paragraph, translating it and repeating until the last page, you will be able to click the full text translation button to translate everything.
Speaking of Edge’s built-in PDF reader, Microsoft recently confirmed that it plans to remove the built-in PDF engine and instead support Adobe. Microsoft has rolled out the Adobe-powered PDF viewer to all users of Edge, but some may have manually disabled the integration from “Edge://flags/”. According to Microsoft, the original PDF engine will be officially retired in 2025.
At the same time, Microsoft plans to clean up the settings page of the Edge browser. The settings page of Microsoft Edge is bloated and cluttered. To solve this problem, Microsoft will add quick settings and sublists to the browser. You can use quick settings to open frequently visited options instead of endlessly scrolling the page to find early setting options. Sublists break down the page into presentational ways, making it easy for you to find all settings related to a feature/group and then adjust them all at the same time. Google Chrome has been implementing this clean look for a few years, and Microsoft Edge is catching up.
