Apple and Google team up to create “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers“This industry standard. This specification allows iOS and Android users to receive alerts if a Bluetooth tracking device is being used to track users without their knowledge. This specification will help reduce the misuse of devices intended to assist in tracking personal belongings and prevent the inappropriate use of Bluetooth trackers to track other people. Earlier today (14th), Apple implemented this feature in iOS 17.5, and Google will now launch this feature on Android 6.0+ devices.
With this new feature, Cross-Platform Tracking Detection will send a notification to the user if a compatible Bluetooth tracker that is not owned by the user is moving with the user, regardless of which operating system the device is paired with. Users will now receive a “[Object] detected moving with you” alert on their device.
If a user receives this type of alert on their iOS device, it means that someone else’s AirTags, Find accessories, or other industry-compliant Bluetooth trackers are following their movements. It’s possible that the tracker is attached to an item the user has borrowed, but if not, the iPhone can view the tracker’s identification number, have the tracker play a sound that helps locate it, and get instructions for deactivating the tracker.
