Meta recently quietly launched a new independent application called Forum, which focuses on an in-depth discussion experience based on Facebook groups. From the perspective of product positioning, Forum is obviously designed to be a space closer to Reddit. Meta describes it as “an exclusive platform designed for in-depth discussions, real answers, and communities you care about.” It attempts to separate group conversations from the original Facebook ecosystem and form a more focused communication field.

This application is the earliestDiscovered by social media consultant Matt Navarra, the login method still uses a Facebook account. After logging in, Forum will automatically load the user’s groups, personal information and dynamic content. Users can choose to post under a nickname, maintaining the same participation style as a Facebook group. Meta emphasized that Forum does not replace existing Facebook groups, but provides another interface and interactive form; all content posted in Forum will still be displayed simultaneously in the original Facebook group.

Forum’s dynamic presentation method is centered on “real conversations within the group” rather than hot topics pushed by algorithms. Meta said this design makes it easier for users to follow the thread of discussions and quickly pick up where they left off when they return to the app. The overall experience is more like a discussion board focused on community issues rather than the information flow of a general social platform. Forum has also added a number of AI features. The “Ask a Question” tab in the app is driven by artificial intelligence, where users can ask questions, and the system will compile relevant answers from discussions in different groups to form cross-community knowledge integration. In addition, Forum also provides administrator-specific AI assistants to assist in content review and group management, reducing the maintenance burden of large communities.
This isn’t Meta’s first attempt at building a standalone group app. As early as 2014, Meta launched a dedicated Facebook Groups App to make it easier for users to switch and share content between different groups, but the project was terminated in 2017. The launch of Forum can be seen to some extent as Meta’s attempt to separate the group experience from the main application and start over with a clearer product positioning.
Forum is one of two new apps recently launched by Meta. Just last month, Meta also launched Instants, a lightweight app that allows users to share photos that disappear after they are viewed with Instagram friends. For example, the concept of Instants clearly draws on BeReal and Snapchat, while Meta Edits, launched last year, is considered to be highly inspired by ByteDance’s CapCut. Although Forum is based on Facebook groups, its Reddit-like positioning inevitably raises questions about its degree of differentiation. The launch of Forum is not only the result of Meta’s accelerated product experimentation in the AI era, but also reflects the company’s attempt to redefine the form of community interaction.
