Liberate the 1 vs. 1 limit! Google Meet officially supports 1080p multi-person chat

Perhaps it is because other competitors such as Microsoft Teams and even Zoom have already supported 1080p resolution video calls. Google Meet chose to make a splash this year. First, at the beginning of the year, it began to push 1080p resolution video call support for specific users during 1-to-1 personal video conferences. Now, in a post on the Workspace Updates blog, the official announced that video conferencing for multi-person chats will also be able to activate higher-quality Full HD resolution support.

For those who can see the difference in resolution or even frame rate, at this stage, it is quite easy to buy a screen with a resolution close to or even exceeding 4K resolution for general computers and even mobile phone systems. There are more and more people who “can’t go back” because they have experienced higher-standard displays. To be honest, it’s not too strange.

For paid subscription users of the Google Meet video conferencing service, when Google opened up the 1080p resolution specification in stages at the beginning of this year, the problem of using it happily but having to reduce the resolution when switching to multi-person video, resulting in a gap in experience, has finally been officially solved.

According to the official announcement, the Google Meet video conferencing service will next provide 1080p Full HD “maximum” resolution video options from 1-to-1 video chat to multi-person video conferencing.

It is reported that when users use a higher-resolution video device to conduct a web-based online meeting, the system will pop up a prompt window to enable 1080p video resolution – after clicking it, a “1080p” symbol will appear in the upper right corner of the video conference, indicating that this video conference will be able to activate the highest Full HD image quality (subject to network bandwidth and other conditions permitting).

That is to say, if you miss the prompt window, you don’t have to worry about never finding this option again. Basically, in the more settings of “…”, you can find this setting in the “Video” option.

According to official information, this feature is basically not available to paid subscription users of Google One. It will be available to users of Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Workspace Individual. Are you in the eligible cohort? Don’t forget to turn on the high-definition option the next time you have a multi-person meeting to make the quality of the video conference even better!
