The Steam Deck was once out of stock due to demand exceeding supply, and now Valve isLatest press releasesannounced that it would be back on the shelves and adjust the price. The 512GB OLED version is priced at $789, up from $549, while the 1TB OLED version is priced at $949, up from $649. Valve explained that this price increase mainly reflects the increase in component costs and the challenges posed by the global logistics environment. In other words, the increase of $240 and $300 is a microcosm of the current industry situation.

For players who are familiar with the PC market, this news may not be surprising, but it is still disappointing. After all, the Steam Deck was priced very competitively before it was sold out, attracting many players to buy it. However, even with the price increase, the Steam Deck can still be more cost-effective than building a PC yourself in some cases. Compared to similar portable gaming consoles, it’s priced roughly in line with the Asus ROG Ally and still less than the likes of the Lenovo Rescue Go.
In fact, even a company like Valve cannot completely avoid the impact of supply chain and macroeconomics. The hardware configuration of Steam Deck OLED is quite good: it is equipped with AMD Zen 2 quad-core customized processor, equipped with 16GB LPDDR5 memory, and provides up to 1TB NVMe solid-state drive. The overall performance and user experience are still attractive among products in the same price range. If measured in terms of cost performance, such specifications are indeed worth the money.
For those on a budget, Valve also offers refurbished options. The 512GB Steam Deck OLED refurbished machine is priced at $629. Although the price still fluctuates, it is more affordable than the new machine. If you can accept an LCD screen, the previous generation 512GB LCD version of the refurbished machine is only $359, making it a low-cost way to get a Steam Deck. In comparison, Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 is also facing price increases, and the Steam Deck still has a certain price advantage.
However, the computer and game hardware market is changing rapidly, and component costs and logistics challenges are often directly reflected on the consumer side. This means that even ordinary players who just want to play “Cyberpunk 2077” during their commute will have to bear the pressure of rising prices. For game enthusiasts, Steam Deck is still a choice that combines performance and portability, but today’s entry barrier is no longer as easy as it used to be.
