Doubao is a versatile AI assistant launched by ByteDance in August 2023. Doubao uses Yunque, a large language model developed by ByteDance, to provide multimodal generation and understanding across text, images, voice, and video. Doubao is available as a web version and a mobile app, and can be used on both computers and phones.

Search
After registering, you can start using Doubao. I tested Doubao’s search function by asking it about recent rumors surrounding the next-generation Apple Vision Pro. The information Doubao compiled was accurate (all of Doubao’s search data comes from Chinese websites).

Image generation
Next is the main highlight of this introduction. While other AI assistants can only generate one or two photos at a time, Doubao can already generate up to 20 photos at once. I asked Doubao to generate images based on my likeness, including styles such as Ghibli and Pixar. Since I didn’t have many ideas, I also asked Doubao to come up with other styles, and in the end requested 20 different styles of images. Below are the results generated by Doubao. Doubao’s image generation is completely free and unlimited. If you think the generated style doesn’t meet your requirements, you can keep generating repeatedly until you’re satisfied with the outputs:
- Use my image to generate pictures in styles like Ghibli, Pixar, Snoopy, and Crayon Shin-chan. I want around 20 styles total—you can come up with the rest.
- Using the image I uploaded, generate 20 chibi-style emoticons commonly used in messaging apps.
- Based on the image I uploaded, generate 20 images in different styles.
Video generation
Besides image generation, Doubao also offers video generation services. The editor used the prompt ‘A butterfly flies from the right side of the frame to the center, and the cat in the image follows it with its eyes’ to generate a video — you can check out the result. Just a reminder: Doubao currently only provides 10 free video generation opportunities per day, so if you plan to generate videos, be mindful of your usage count!
Music generation
Doubao also offers a music generation feature—just select the options you need and it can generate music with vocals. You can choose to write your own lyrics or let Doubao write them for you!
Actually, Doubao has been really great to use so far, and its free unlimited image generation service alone is almost enough to beat out other AI assistants on the market that offer image generation. Although Doubao isn’t as good as ChatGPT when it comes to capturing the nuances of character expressions in images, Doubao can keep generating without any limits on the number of images.
