China recently reported on the Internet that Xiaomi’s next-generation folding flagship MIX Fold 5 has passed the “three-certification certification” and is just one step away from its official release. According to the blogger Digital Chat Station, the new model “2608BPX34C” is expected to be unveiled in August 2026. It will be equipped with Xiaomi’s self-developed Xuanjie O3 processor, ThePaper OS 4 system, and a variety of self-developed AI large models, realizing the “self-developed chip, self-developed OS, self-developed AI large model master” previously predicted by Lei Jun.
Xuan Ring O3: Skip O2 and go directly to 3nm
The biggest highlight of MIX Fold 5 is that it is first equipped with the XRING O3 (XRING O3) flagship SoC, which is the successor of the XRING O1. Xiaomi skipped the O2 codename directly. Xuanjie O3 adopts TSMC’s 3nm (N3P) process. The CPU architecture is a three-cluster design with ultra-large cores, high-performance cores and energy-efficiency cores. The main frequencies are 4.05GHz, 3.42GHz and 3.02GHz respectively. The GPU clock reaches 1.49GHz and the memory bandwidth is 9600MT/s.
This means Xiaomi officially bids farewell to the long-term practice of using Qualcomm Snapdragon flagship chips for the MIX Fold series. TrendForce reported that Xuanjie O3 is Xiaomi’s first mass-produced folding screen-specific SoC, which has optimized the architecture level for the multi-tasking use case of folding screens. Other leaked information mentioned that the starting price may increase by about 10% compared with the previous generation, and may exceed the RMB 10,000 mark. Xuanjie O3 directly skips the O2 code name, uses TSMC’s 3nm process, and is first installed on the folding flagship, showing that Xiaomi’s confidence in self-developed chips has been raised to a new level.
Lei Jun has previously stated publicly: “In 2026, Xiaomi is expected to implement self-developed chips, self-developed OS, and self-developed AI large model masters on one terminal.” MIX Fold 5 is the specific realization of this sentence. From chips to operating systems to AI models, everything is self-developed or deeply integrated. In the Android camp, except for Samsung and Huawei, few manufacturers can achieve this level.
In terms of other specifications, MIX Fold 5 is equipped with a 67W fast charging head and supports UWB ultra-wideband technology and N79 5G frequency band. In addition, 67W fast charging is a relatively conservative configuration in Xiaomi’s current flagship product line. Regular flagship models have basically covered 100W fast charging. In terms of camera, MIX Fold 5 will be equipped with a 200-megapixel main lens and a large-capacity battery of about 6000mAh.
ThePaper OS 4: Comprehensive reconstruction of the bottom layer of the system
In terms of software, MIX Fold 5 will be equipped with ThePaper OS 4 (the international version is HyperOS 4), based on Android 17. Xiaomi has carried out a comprehensive underlying reconstruction of the system this time, cleaning up the redundant and historical legacy codes accumulated over the years, with the goal of bringing significant improvements in fluency and AI capabilities.
GSMArena reported that actual photos of MIX Fold 5 have leaked out, using a new “wide folding” solution. The screen size after unfolding is about 7.5 to 7.6 inches, and the crease control has also been improved. This will be Xiaomi’s first mass-produced wide-folding model, which is significantly different from the design language of the previous three generations of MIX Fold.
Top ten large AI models filed in one go
What attracted the most attention from the outside world is that MIX Fold 5 has registered multiple large AI models in one go, covering the lineup of Xiaomi’s self-research and partners: Xiaomi large model, Xiaomi Pascal visual model, Xiaomi Pascal perception model, Xiaomi MiMo large model, Zhipu AI large model, Wenxin Yiyan large model, Skylark (Doubao) large model, DeepSeek large model, Tongyi Qianwen large model, Hunyuan large model.
This list includes almost all the major players in China’s AI large model market, from Xiaomi’s self-developed MiMo to Baidu’s Wenxinyiyan, Bitbeat’s Doubao, DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen, and Tencent’s Hunyuan, all at once. Xiaomi clearly intends to position MIX Fold 5 as an integrated platform for AI capabilities, rather than just a foldable phone.
Judging from the registered large model lineup, Xiaomi has adopted a “want them all” strategy. The Paper Vision Model and ThePaper Perception Model are multi-modal models self-developed by Xiaomi, responsible for image recognition and environment perception tasks on the device side. The MiMo large model is a universal conversation model developed by Xiaomi. As for external large models such as Zhipu, Baidu, Byte, DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Tencent, they provide users with more choices through API integration. This multi-model architecture of “mainly self-research, supplemented by external sources” allows users to automatically switch to the most suitable model according to different scenarios.
Wide folding solutions and competition in the folding machine market
The “wide folding” solution adopted by MIX Fold 5 is also worthy of attention. Compared with the narrow and long inner screen ratio of the first three generations of MIX Fold, the wide folding experience is closer to that of a tablet when unfolded. The 7.5 to 7.6-inch screen size coupled with improved crease control will have obvious advantages in productivity applications and multi-tasking operations.
In terms of competition in the folding machine market, Huawei Mate X6 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 are the main competitors of MIX Fold 5. Huawei also adopts the self-developed chip route, but its manufacturing process is restricted due to sanctions. Although Samsung leads the global folding market share, its recent product innovations have been evaluated by the market as being conservative. If Xiaomi can prove that the performance and stability of its self-developed chips reach flagship levels on MIX Fold 5, it will have a substantial impact on the folding machine market structure.
Discussions on Reddit and social platforms also show that overseas users are paying a lot of attention to MIX Fold 5, and are especially interested in the combination of self-developed chips and 6000mAh large batteries. However, current news indicates that MIX Fold 5 will only be sold in the Chinese market initially, and the overseas launch time has not yet been determined.
