When using a computer, even just copying text, a URL, or an image in a browser tab is very simple. Almost anyone who regularly uses a computer already has the muscle memory to copy and paste directly by pressing Ctrl + C (or Cmd + C) and Ctrl + V (or Cmd + V). However, this seemingly simple process is much cumbersome on mobile devices, including iOS and iPadOS. Until recently, Apple added a feature for them.

Apple recently added a new feature called “drag and drop” on the iPad, which is designed to allow users to copy and move text and items within apps using simple gestures, and to operate across apps. Although not every third-party app supports it, apps you frequently use will basically support this feature.
For iPhone users, easier copy-and-paste will be available on any future phone running iOS 15 and above, so you can now transfer links, text, and images without switching screens. Having said that, Apple does not force everyone to use the new drag-and-drop function. The basic function of long-pressing and selecting copy and paste from the menu can still be used.
How to use drag and drop?
As long as you have iOS 15 or above installed on your iPhone, you can start using drag and drop. Since it requires some finger movements that you may not be used to at first, it may take you some time to adapt, but once you get used to it, you will find how easy it is to use.
- First highlight the URL and text you want to copy and long press it.
- At this time, please ignore the old menu. You will see the text pop up in a white frame. Just drag your finger on the screen to start copying the image or text.
- Keep your finger still on the screen, then use another finger (or thumb, whichever is convenient) to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see the list of idle apps, then use that other finger to select the app you want to pin. (Please do not release your finger holding the content you want to copy during the entire process)
- Drag the content over and drop it where you want it to be pasted, then lift your finger from the screen. (You can see a green + sign after dragging and copying successfully)
