9:16 Straight photos are also OK, Instagram is one step closer to fully “Douyin”

Perhaps for those of you who have only started using IG (Instagram) in recent years, this service should have long been in the form of popular social applications such as Facebook/Meta, or even TikTok. However, for old users who found it very interesting to play because of their insistence on square composition, they may also feel that Instagram has long since lost its so-called soul, or its own unique style. However, it seems that at least the official is quite satisfied with this trend, so they are ready to accept some “in this case, why not…” functions. Continue reading 9:16 Straight photos are also OK, Instagram is fully “Douyin” to further report the content.

9:16 Straight photos are also OK, Instagram is one step closer to fully “Douyin”

With the straight sliding interface on mobile phones, Reels, which attracts attention for a relatively long time, has become the new favorite algorithm and layout of Instagram. Social video formats that correspond to the mobile phone generation, such as straight-format videos and limited-time animations, continue to become a trend closely followed by many social networking sites – although it feels like they are just following TikTok.

It’s been a busy week at Instagram. I’m doing an AMA shortly – https://t.co/aM4JODvskg – like I do every Friday. Ask a question there and I’ll do my best to answer it.

— Adam Mosseri (@mosseri) July 29, 2022

Such a strategy has come to this day. Instagram executive Adam Mosseri mentioned in a preview of new features in regular social interactions that since the platform can fully support straight videos, it does not seem to make much sense compared to the restriction of only posting 8:10 or 4:5 straight photos. This idea of taking TikTok one step further, and finally confirmed that the function of 9:16 vertical photos will be launched to users in the next few weeks.

In short, Instagram should continue to move towards a format that is very friendly to common video cropping ratios such as 16:9.

Although Adam Mosseri believes that this is an attitude that treats video and photo sharing formats equally. And since 9:16 photos can already be posted in sections such as limited-time updates, they can also be added to the selection. Speaking of which, Instagram has already adopted this format. However, the author views this change as a sign that Instagram’s road to fully TikTok-ing has almost come to an end – the previous policy was supposed to be biased toward Facebook, and then it was to embrace the concept of Snapchat, and now…

It has to be said that although such an approach that follows the trend can attract or stick to users, they are less likely to jump to other services because they are not fresh. However, at the same time, it will also cause existing users to start to feel unfamiliar, and even think that the service has lost its original feeling – not to mention that the social algorithm and creator resources may be relatively “biased” to the new sharing form they hope to promote… For creators, if they want to maintain social interaction, they have to follow up obediently, and at the same time, they will also feel helpless.

Although it is not wrong to say that the platform takes users to grow and learn together, after all, it cannot be called an innovative function (and so far, most of them follow…), which still makes people feel that the platform is gradually losing its characteristics. I don’t know what everyone thinks? Or do you think that as long as you are not forced to jump to other services and you can play the new popular functions and formats, it will be OK?
