There were previous rumors that the power consumption of NVIDIA’s next-generation flagship graphics card RTX 4090 would reach 600W. When the news came out, many players were surprised. The power consumption was too scary. Although those who later broke the news said that it should still be at 450W, the 600W figure is likely to be seen in two or three years. AMD recently predicted that by 2025, the power consumption of graphics cards will reach a maximum of 600W~700W, which means that in the future, players will need to prepare a higher-wattage power supply to power a game console.

AMD predicts that by 2025, graphics card power consumption will reach 600W~700W

According to a report by foreign media Techspot, in a recent VentureBeat interview with AMD Vice President Sam Naffziger, AMD revealed their predictions for future hardware. The power consumption of graphics cards increased steadily before 2015, and then rapidly increased. By about 2024 to 2025, there will be graphics cards with a power consumption of 600W~700W, as this chart also shows. Next year the graphics card may break 500W:

The graphics cards here should all refer to the highest-end ones, such as the current RTX 3090 series, RX 6900 XT and RX 6950XT. Although the power consumption of mid- to low-end graphics cards will also increase, the extent may not be that large.

In this era when all countries are paying attention to the environment and energy, such a rapid increase in graphics card power consumption is actually quite worrying, especially now that there is a mining industry. Although the recent sharp decline in cryptocurrency has caused many mines to suspend operations or even stop losses, the same situation happened several years ago, so if it increases in the future Cryptocurrency has surged again, and everyone is buying graphics cards for mining. By then, the total power consumption will be much higher than it is now. This is really bad for the environment. Since the cryptocurrency mining industry will not disappear, governments around the world should find ways to limit the electricity consumption of this industry, such as: a certain percentage must use renewable energy, or even all of it.

During the interview, Naffziger also added that AMD can not only solve the power consumption problem of graphics cards, but also meet consumers’ expectations for improved performance of new graphics cards. AMD has been promoting Infinity Cache’s unique cache technology in recent years, which can effectively improve performance and power efficiency. It was also mentioned that small chip design is an area where NVIDIA is leading.

AMD’s new generation of Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards is expected to be released from the end of October to mid-November this year. AMD’s 2022 Analyst Day previously revealed some details, including 5nm process, advanced small chip packaging, rebuilt computing unit, optimized graphics pipeline, next-generation AMD Infinity Cache cache technology, and performance improvement of more than 50% compared to RDNA2:

According to foreign media Wccftech According to reports, the optimized graphics pipeline of RDNA 3 GPU will allow higher clocks than RDNA 2 GPU. Currently, AMD Radeon RX 6000 graphics card can already run close to 3 GHz, so through the 5nm process, we can expect RX 7000 to break through the 3 GHz clock limit.
