You might find it hard to believe that the PlayStation 5 can actually run Windows games and programs directly, and it’s not even through the previous… The Linux WayDeveloper Mihawk (@Mihawk9_9A recent post on X showcased homebrew software called PP (PS5 Proton), demonstrating a jailbroken PS5 running various Windows games and programs. The demo video showed PC programs such as Minecraft: Java Edition running on the PS5.

PP (PS5 Proton): Enables the PS5 to run Windows software and games directly.
Bring the Steam Deck approach to PS5
PP (PS5 Proton) has a two-layer technical core: the first layer rewrites a ported Wine compatibility layer to correspond to the system calls of the PS5 operating system, Prospero OS, allowing Windows binaries to load in the console environment. The second layer is Proton: Valve’s widely used solution on Steam Deck and SteamOS, which translates DirectX graphics API instructions into native Vulkan instructions. Because the hardware architectures of the PS5 and PC are highly similar, an AMD Zen 2 x86-64 processor paired with AMD Radeon graphics is the foundation that makes such translation layers possible. The project is currently still in the early stage of public demonstration, and the current demonstration has already proven that third-party computer programs can run on Sony’s platform. Such solutions push the functional scope of jailbroken devices outward, turning game consoles into general-purpose platforms capable of running a large amount of software.

PP differs significantly from the earlier approach of installing Linux on a PS5 and then running Proton: PP is designed to run Windows games directly on the console, skipping the step of installing a full Linux distribution. In his October 3 launch tweet, Mihawk also included acknowledgements, crediting the Wine port to another author, 0xManuel.
It’s still in the demo stage, and the author is already throwing cold water on it himself.
The focus of the PS5 Proton October 4 update is the interface: a new logo, a fully revamped UI, as many as 30 selectable themes—the UI and themes are by @BlkBearReloaded—plus various optimizations. Someone commented asking whether the project has launched, and Mihawk replied directly: Not yet; it still needs a lot of improvement and isn’t even at the pre-release stage.

Currently, there is no public version of PS5 Proton, nor a source code repository, and game compatibility and performance data are unknown.
The Man Behind PP: Mihawk, Who Squeezed the PC Ecosystem into the PS5
PP isn’t the first time Mihawk has crammed the PC ecosystem into a PS5. In September 2026, he released Native PS5 version of RetroArchThrough a self-made PS5_Vulkan graphics compatibility layer, Vulkan calls are translated to the PS5’s GPU, allowing RetroArch to run natively on jailbroken consoles without a heavy compatibility layer. The first version supports five software-rendered cores: NES, GBA, SNES, Neo Geo, and Mega Drive. The PSP core PPSSPP is the first to use GPU hardware acceleration, making it the project’s first emulation core to directly use the graphics chip. His GitHub also includes PS5 ports such as the PS5 version of the RPCS3 emulator and PS5_Mesa.

In the same wave of the ecosystem, there are also ports in other directions: the PS5 jailbreak community has already gotten original Xbox games running on jailbroken consoles, and Xbox 360 emulation is also in development; XPSemu, which is ahead in public builds and game records, is one example.
The Prerequisite Is Jailbreaking First: Relapse and Firmware Attack and Defense
The direct catalyst for this wave of PS5 homebrew is jailbreak tools. The Relapse jailbreak supports all PS5 models with firmware 7.00 through 13.60, including the PS5 Pro. Its attack chain combines a browser exploit and a kernel exploit to gain kernel-level read/write access, allowing homebrew payloads such as etaHEN to be loaded. After the 13.60 jailbreak was publicly released, development of emulators, ports, and translation layers accelerated noticeably, and nearly every console on the market could potentially be reached by third-party software.

The cat-and-mouse game is ongoing: on the eve of the PP showcase, Sony released new firmware, officially described as performance optimization, mainly to block the core vulnerability behind the jailbreak. New PS5 games have already begun requiring firmware 14.00, and the publicly discussed uses of the jailbreak are mostly software-related applications.
Conclusion
PS5 Proton is currently just a demo being shown off: no public download, no compatibility list, no performance data. The direction it points in is quite clear, though. Once the Wine and Proton translation layers gain a foothold on PS5, the boundaries of jailbroken consoles will expand beyond emulators and pirated games, and the end state is an x86-64 machine capable of running Windows software. With consoles as absurdly expensive as they are right now, the PS5 might even turn into a great-value PC—though Sony certainly wouldn’t be happy about that.
