When the sci-fi open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077, developed by CDPR, first officially launched in late 2020, it sparked controversy due to various technical issues. But after years of continuous updates and fixes, and with the release of the major expansion Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 update in 2023, the game’s potential was finally realized. Yet even though the game has made a complete comeback, the CDPR team still has not stopped bringing updates to it.

Just as the acclaimed Netflix anime adaptation Cyberpunk: Edgerunners released its long-awaited sequel earlier this month, CDPR also released the free 2.5 update for the game. In addition to adding crossover missions, gear, and radio stations tied to the popular anime, it introduced many new features, such as a skill for dual-wielding weapons, equipment color customization, and even an official mod platform, allowing console players to install various officially verified popular mods.

This update further brought a richer and more diverse gameplay experience to Cyberpunk 2077, and according to CDPR’s official explanation, even though they had already begun allocating their main resources to new projects such as The Witcher 4 and the Cyberpunk sequel, they still couldn’t resist the opportunity to release more updates for Cyberpunk 2077.
In a recent post on CDPR’s official blog, associate game director Paweł Sasko said that when the team added various new features to Cyberpunk 2077 in past updates, it always kept one very important goal in mind: to give players a richer, more stable, and more believable immersive experience in Night City, and this was one of the reasons the 2.5 update was released.

“Ultimately, this is why we’re releasing another update for Cyberpunk 2077. This game world always keeps giving us reasons we have to come back. Edgerunners 2 brings another perspective to the series, and Update 2.5 brings that perspective back into the game, while also giving players more ways to play and making Night City truly their own place. To me, that’s what a shared universe should feel like. Different stories, different characters, different media formats, but everything happens in the same city that remembers all the stories. I hope players are happy to be able to come back here again,” said Paweł Sasko.
As things stand, CDPR still has many new projects on its hands. In addition to The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 mentioned above, they are continuing to develop a new large-scale DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Songs of the Past, while a remake of the first The Witcher and an unannounced new IP, Project Hadar, are also in the works. So the fact that the team can still find time to bring such a massive update to Cyberpunk 2077 is truly surprising.
