A time-traveling historical tool! Old Maps Online lets you drag the timeline to understand global battles and ancient maps.

When conducting historical and cultural textual research, geographical research, or simply looking for high-resolution historical map materials, most of the information found through searches is fragmented, and few websites provide unified integration. The website introduced in this article《Old Maps OnlineIt is a powerful open-source geographic search platform created precisely to solve this pain point. It digitizes and geographically indexes more than several hundred thousand precious historical maps from around the world. Users only need to move the modern map view and drag the historical year slider, and the system automatically matches and lists historical map data covering that area:

Introduction to Old Maps Online

  • Old Maps Online URL

Click the URL above to go to the Old Maps Online website. One nice thing about this site is that it supports Chinese itself, though it’s Simplified Chinese—still, being able to understand it is what matters most:

Why specifically recommend the Old Maps Online website? On Old Maps Online’s map, you can clearly look up countries on the world map, and when you click into a country, you can also see a basic overview. However, the latest timeline only goes up to 2010, but for people who want to trace history back, the website’s features are quite convenient:

At the bottom is a timeline that you can drag to view the period from 4000 BC all the way through 2016. As you drag, the map also changes according to the different national powers:

As time keeps advancing, the map will show the spheres of influence of different countries. Through this presentation, you can understand which country governs this region at this point in time:

Besides the region, the top menu also has four selectable features: Region / Ruler / People / Battles. By selecting the Ruler option like this, you can see who ruled this country in this era—much simpler and clearer than rummaging through a history textbook:

If you want to know which notable people there were in this era and region, such as artists, athletes, poets…etc., you can also use the feature options to filter:

However, there are so many famous historical figures that the map ends up with densely packed names appearing like this in the image:

And similarly, you only need to click on a person’s name on the map to see a summary of that notable person. If you’re interested in this person, you can also Google them yourself to learn more:

The feature I’m most interested in is none other than “campaign”. In the battles section, you can clearly tell which battles took place in which region in that year. Many lesser-known battles are also included here, and the coverage is far more extensive than what we used to read in textbooks:

When studying, I always found content about World War II confusing. With a presentation like Old Maps Online, you can see exactly which battles took place on that map during that era. Clicking any battle directly expands detailed campaign dates, the opposing sides, and a summary of key developments, saving the time spent manually cross-checking and searching across different webpages. This visual presentation, which seamlessly integrates “timeline, geographic space, and historical events,” not only makes the originally complicated and chaotic WWII battle lines clear at a glance, but is also an extremely intuitive and practical auxiliary tool for anyone who wants to quickly establish historical context or verify details:

Historical events that Taiwan has experienced are also included here. If you want to quickly understand past history, you might use this tool to observe:

However, Old Maps Online hasn’t been updated since 2010, but for people who want to learn about world history, whether it gets updated or not doesn’t seem to matter that much XD

But this website is not free. Although regular free users can use basic browsing features, there are quota limits on the number of searches, people/occupation filters, and private map data uploads. If you want an ad-free experience, unlimited use of advanced search and browsing history, or need to export high-resolution GeoTIFF and JPG files, you have to pay for a subscription to its Friend (starting at about $2.09 per month) or Member (starting at about $10.47 per month) plan:

But from my experience, you can keep using the features after watching an occasional ad—it just depends on whether you want to be a freeloader:

User Review

Old Maps Online perfectly combines a dry timeline with geospatial data: drag the year slider and you can intuitively see regime changes and the distribution of battles, making it especially effortless to look up World War II and Taiwan history. Although free users have usage limits and occasionally need to watch ads to unlock features, for everyday fact-checking, lesson preparation, or purely as a history enthusiast, the free features are already quite powerful. Highly recommended for history and culture lovers to bookmark and use!
