With AI data centers booming, severe shortages of memory and other components have begun to emerge worldwide, causing many electronic devices to rise in price accordingly. Nvidia’s GPUs have been hit hardest, especially this generation’s flagship graphics card, the RTX 5090. At one point, rumors even circulated that Nvidia was about to discontinue it and shift more resources to the production lines for high-end RTX PRO workstation AI compute cards. However, Nvidia officially came forward last week to deny the rumor.
According to 《DexertoAccording to the 》 website’s report, at the “RTX Spark Launch Party” held in Taipei on October 16, Nvidia Senior Vice President of Personal Computing Jeff Fisher formally responded directly to rumors that the “RTX 5090 is about to be discontinued.” According to this executive, although Nvidia is indeed currently facing severe supply constraints, it will do everything it can to ensure its products remain available on the market.
“The supply chain is indeed somewhat tight, but Nvidia is doing everything it can to get its products to market. Although there are other variants of the RTX 5090, it has definitely not been discontinued. Nvidia will continue shipping, which is very important,” he said.
Unfortunately, Fisher did not further clarify what exactly he meant by the RTX 5090 “variant” he mentioned, nor did he reveal when the current supply constraints are expected to improve.
As for where the news that the RTX 5090 is about to be discontinued actually came from, it initially came from a claim by well-known hardware leaker hongxing2020, who said he had received a notice from the manufacturer indicating that this high-end graphics card was about to cease production. Not long afterward, another leaker, Zed__Wang, also came forward to echo the rumor.
Moreover, the leak at the time also mentioned that, in addition to the RTX 5090, Nvidia would stop producing the RTX 5090 D special edition graphics card for the Chinese market, so that more resources could be allocated to related products such as professional graphics cards and data center hardware, while also launching an RTX 5080 with 24GB VRAM to replace the current 16GB version.
For now, Jeff Fisher has only responded by denying the rumor that the RTX 5090 is about to be discontinued; other details and whether a 24GB version of the RTX 5080 is real remain unconfirmed. What is certain, however, is that the RTX 50 series supply issues caused by the memory chaos are still ongoing.
As for when supply will return to normal, whether actual supply volumes in various regional markets will be affected, and what exactly the other rumored RTX 5090 versions are, further clarification from Nvidia is still awaited.
