The PS6 price may exceed $1,000, with the latest leak claiming that memory and SSD costs alone are as high as $680.

Since its launch, the PlayStation 5 has arguably kept getting more expensive, with two price increases so far. Even the more expensive PS5 Pro was raised to NT$27,478 in May this year, approaching the NT$30,000 mark, and the situation for the next-generation PS6 could be even worse. The latest leak indicates that the PS6’s memory and SSD storage alone already cost more than US$680, before accounting for other components such as the processor, cooling, and power supply, so the final price could directly exceed US$1,000, and gamers may need to prepare themselves mentally.

PS6 could become the most expensive PlayStation ever! A leak claims that memory and SSD costs alone exceed $680, and the price could top $1,000.

According to foreign media Wccftech According to reports, well-known hardware leaker KeplerL2, in NeoGAF It was revealed on forums that the combined cost of the PS6’s RAM and NAND flash memory already exceeds $680, meaning these two components alone cost more than $680. Therefore, after adding other parts, the PS6’s total bill of materials (BOM) cost has likely crossed $1,000, which means the console’s retail price at launch is almost certain to exceed $1,000:

At the end of March this year, KeplerL2 estimated that the PS6’s BOM would be about $760, and at the time believed that as long as Sony was willing to subsidize it a little, the PS6 still had a chance to sell for $699. Another leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, gave an estimate of $743 at the time, and the two figures were quite close.

At the end of June, KeplerL2 updated again, saying that the BOM had risen by another roughly $200 and was now very close to $1,000, and believed that if the digital version of the PS6 sold for $999, that might be the best-case scenario.

Unexpectedly, after nearly another 4 months, the $1,000 mark simply couldn’t hold—it’s fair to say that every few months, the estimated price of the PS6 gets more expensive.

Time Leak source Estimate details
End of March 2026 KeplerL2 The full-device BOM is about US$760, and after subsidies it could potentially sell for US$699.
End of March 2026 Moore’s Law Is Dead The complete unit BOM is approximately USD 743.
End of June 2026 KeplerL2 The full-device BOM has risen by another roughly US$200, approaching US$1,000.
Mid-October 2026 KeplerL2 Just RAM and NAND alone exceed $680.

The $680 figure only covers memory and SSD storage; the PS6’s core APU, motherboard, cooling module, power supply, case, and the controller included in the box are not yet included. Compared with the March estimate of $760 for the full console, $680 is already roughly 90% of the cost of the entire console at that time. This shows, from this proportion, just how sharply memory prices have risen over the past six months.

KeplerL2 also mentioned that when Sony and Microsoft began designing next-generation console chips, the industry estimated GDDR7 prices could fall to about $3 per GB. But according to Wccftech, GDDR7 currently costs about $20–23 per GB, roughly 7 times the original expectation:

Given how high the costs are, might the PS6 simply be delayed?

According to previous leaks, Sony is still targeting late 2027 for the PS6 launch, at the latest early 2028. KeplerL2 previously also believed that a delay was not a reasonable option, because if memory prices continue to worsen, delaying would only make it more expensive. Once prices stabilize, there is no need to delay.

Moore’s Law Is Dead also pointed out that Sony has already booked 3nm capacity with TSMC for Q2 2027. Pulling out now would not only cause delays but could also cost it its priority slot—a price higher than paying more for memory.

If the PS6 really launches at a price above $1,000 in the future, it will set a new record for the launch price of a standard PlayStation home console. For comparison, the 60GB version of the PS3 launched in the U.S. in 2006 at $599, while the PS5 Pro released in 2024 raised that to $699.99.
