Google is working to make links in AI answers more prominent.

As generative AI increasingly becomes a key gateway to web search, Google is working to address concerns that AI search results may reduce website traffic. To make it easier for users to reach original sources of information, Google recently announced updates to its AI Mode and AI Overviews features, strengthening how links are presented, adding image previews, and testing a mechanism that prioritizes official websites, hoping to encourage users to further explore content on the open web while providing AI summaries.

Google is working to make links in AI answers more prominent.

One focus of this update is making inline links in AI answers more prominent. In the past, related sources were often placed in less conspicuous positions, and many users might stop searching after reading the AI-organized content, inadvertently overlooking the original websites that provided the information. To address this issue, Google is placing clickable links in more prominent positions and increasing how often they appear, so users can more easily find the sources while reading AI answers and further consult the full content.

In addition, Google has redesigned the “Learn more” section in some search results. Besides providing links to related websites, it now also adds image thumbnail previews. Through this visual presentation, users can more quickly determine whether a website’s content meets their needs, which can increase their willingness to click. For content creators and publishers looking to drive website traffic, this design also helps increase content exposure.

In fact, if Google genuinely wants users not to stop at AI-generated summaries and to continue exploring more information online, it must give external website links enough prominence. Although generative AI can quickly organize information, it still cannot fully replace original reporting, expert perspectives, or in-depth analysis. Making it easier for users to access the original websites not only helps information transparency but also sustains the healthy development of the open web ecosystem.

In addition to adjusting how links are displayed, Google is currently testing a new experimental feature. When the system determines that only one or two websites are the most authoritative on a given topic, or have exclusive information that other websites cannot provide, the AI results page will prioritize displaying these official websites. This feature will appear above the AI answer and include a brief description telling users what information each link can provide. This approach allows users to find the most relevant sources more quickly without having to filter through a large number of search results one by one, greatly improving the efficiency of obtaining information.

On the other hand, Google is also expanding its news and article carousel feature to more countries and language markets. In the future, users will be able to swipe through the latest news content, which will also include publications from their personally set “preferred sources.” This means search results will more closely reflect personal interests and reading habits while maintaining a diverse presentation of information.

However, while strengthening its content discovery mechanisms, Google still faces some challenges. For example, in the video search feature being tested in AI Mode, when users click on a creator’s or publisher’s name, the system does not direct them to the website; instead, they are first taken to a profile page in Google Search. Although these pages can provide more information about the creator’s background and work, from a website operator’s perspective, this adds an extra step and may not effectively increase actual website traffic.

It is worth noting that since May of this year, Google has been continuously adjusting the AI search experience, including adding more prominent source links alongside AI answers and prioritizing news content to which users have already subscribed. These changes all reflect Google’s awareness that market concerns about AI search are gradually rising. Many people worry that when AI can directly provide complete answers, users will lose the motivation to click through to websites, further affecting the revenue models of news media, content sites, and creators.

Therefore, Google’s current strategy appears to be seeking a balance between convenience and the open web. On the one hand, it uses AI to provide fast, intuitive answers; on the other, through more prominent links, recommendations of official websites, and visual previews, it guides users back to the sources that actually provide the information. Whether these measures will effectively improve the decline in website traffic in the future remains to be seen, but at least they show that Google is trying to respond to the content industry’s concerns about the AI search era and to maintain the diversity and vitality of the internet ecosystem.
