Earlier this year, Resident Evil: Outbreak Night, directed by Zach Cregger, achieved impressive results at both the box office and with critics, becoming one of the best-reviewed video game adaptations ever while also easily surpassing every previous adaptation of this Capcom survival horror game IP at the box office. Unfortunately, some fans still felt the film had too little connection to the original games, but more recently, a 20-minute short film shot by The Walking Dead actor Chandler Riggs officially went live on YouTube, presenting in a more authentic way Resident Evil 7, which in 2017 brought the series back to its survival horror roots, recreating the bloody and terrifying life-or-death struggle between protagonist Ethan Winters and villain Jack Baker.

Chandler Riggs, who played Carl on the long-running American series The Walking Dead, has once again shown off his talent, proving to fans that beyond acting, he can also direct a horror project himself. And although it is only 20 minutes long, this fan short film still successfully captures the horror atmosphere of Resident Evil 7 while adding a more action-oriented style, making the overall pacing tighter.
This video covers the story from the opening of Resident Evil 7 all the way to the garage boss fight. It faithfully recreates the original game’s staging, from the terrifying dinner after Ethan is kidnapped and taken to the Baker house, to the watch on his wrist that represents his health, and even reattaching his severed limb using a mysterious liquid. Not only that, he also packed the video with various game Easter eggs, constantly bringing surprises to fans of the series.

Even though it didn’t become a theatrical film released worldwide like Resident Evil: Outbreak Night, this Resident Evil 7 short film has successfully caught the attention of Koshi Nakanishi, director of the original video games Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil: Requiem, who shared the short on his personal Instagram account with a colorful “Wow” and hand-drawn rainbow patterns on both sides, expressing his support and appreciation for the work.

For Chandler Riggs, this is undoubtedly the highest recognition one can receive as a die-hard fan of the Resident Evil series and as a creator, and it could even become an important turning point that leads to him directing a feature-length film in the future. After all, this actor has already demonstrated superb directing and coordination skills in this short film, and before long, fans may have the chance to see another unexpected new force in horror cinema.
