Imagine waking up one morning to find your Instagram account suddenly suspended, with someone accusing you of copyright infringement and stealing their content. Even if you’re absolutely certain the claim is baseless, getting your account restored often takes weeks due to the platform’s complicated appeals process. For the average user, it might just be a temporary inconvenience, but for content creators who depend on social media for their livelihood, every single day of suspension can mean real lost income. What’s worse, the person who filed the report then reaches out to you directly, claiming that for a few hundred dollars, they can help withdraw the complaint and get your account back to normal quickly.

Instagram scammers use copyright complaints to hijack creators’ accounts

According to BBC’s latest investigationReports indicate that this new type of scam targeting Instagram creators is gradually spreading. Scam groups are exploiting Meta’s copyright reporting mechanism by submitting large volumes of false infringement claims, using them to extort money from victims. Since platforms take copyright complaints very seriously, accounts that receive multiple reports may face restricted functionality, content removal, or even the risk of being banned. Even if account holders still retain their login access and passwords, losing exposure and access to their content still makes it difficult to maintain normal operations.

BBC interviewed Olly, who runs the Instagram account “Lost in Time History,” which has more than 1.5 million followers. He said that most of the content he posts consists of public domain images or legally licensed material, but this year he still received dozens of false copyright complaints. Since the appeal process took too long, his account was temporarily suspended, affecting his ad revenue and collaboration opportunities. In the end, to get his account back up as quickly as possible, he even paid scammers $50 in cryptocurrency as a condition. He admitted that if he had waited for Meta to handle it through normal procedures, it could have taken weeks, and the income lost during that period would have far exceeded what he paid the scammers.

In fact, such extortion tactics are not isolated incidents. Some data obtained by the BBC shows that certain complainants, after issuing copyright warnings, directly demand that victims pay hefty fees to withdraw their claims, with extortion cases reaching as high as $900. In India, multiple content creators have filed lawsuits with the Delhi High Court over the potential abuse of Meta’s platform copyright system.Indian ExpressPrevious investigations also revealed that some individuals allegedly created copyright disputes by tampering with Facebook post timestamps, further making it harder for creators to clear their names. Additionally, a public petition compiled complaints from 40 creators, highlighting that the problem has reached a considerable scale.

These cases reflect that the copyright complaint system, originally designed to protect intellectual property, can instead be exploited by wrongdoers as a tool for extortion when there are insufficient anti-abuse mechanisms in place. For many creators who rely on social media platforms as a source of work and income, a single malicious complaint can cause considerable financial strain and brand damage.

In response to external criticism, Meta told the BBC that it has restored the affected content and added new protective measures to reduce the risk of accounts being attacked again. Meta emphasized that its copyright management system was originally designed to prevent infringement and that it continues to combat abuse. However, the company has not yet announced a more comprehensive improvement plan, nor has it clarified whether the new measures apply to all creators facing similar situations.

Undeniably, copyright protection is crucial to the creative ecosystem, and legitimate rights holders still need effective channels to safeguard their works. But between rights enforcement and preventing abuse, platforms must find a better balance. How to quickly distinguish genuine infringement from malicious reports, shorten complaint processing times, and prevent creators from being forced to choose between lost revenue and paying ransom have become issues Meta must confront. Although the company has continued to strengthen account support services in recent years, even introducing AI assistants to help handle user issues, looking at the current situation, faster customer service and complaint mechanisms are only part of the solution—the real key still lies in establishing a more robust copyright review system that is less susceptible to abuse.
