Google’s AI image generation tool Pixel Studio has officially been discontinued after less than two years online. With the release of the latest version update, the app—originally launched alongside the Pixel 9 series and focused on quickly generating images and stickers—has been completely shut down, and Google has clearly directed users toward Gemini and Nano Banana as the main entry points for future image generation and animation creation.

Google is shutting down Pixel Studio just two years after its launch and directing users to switch to Gemini.

according to 9to5Google’s report from February of this yearGoogle had already planned to shut down Pixel Studio in a recent update, and the currently rolling out Pixel Studio v2.3 version officially marks the end. After the update, the app no longer retains any generation interface; when launched, it only displays a prominent “Open Gemini” button that, when tapped, directly jumps to the Gemini page on the Play Store. Above the button, there is also a message: “To create images and animations, try using Nano Banana in the Gemini app,” clearly indicating Google’s new strategy: image generation features are fully integrated into the Gemini ecosystem.

Pixel Studio was originally positioned around the selling points of “lightweight, fast, and easy to use,” offering image generation from simple text prompts and a built-in gallery for users to manage past creations. Beyond standard images, it can also generate stickers and even supports importing existing photos for re-creation. After its launch, although it once…Criticized for its stability and generation quality. But Google also continues to improve the experience through updates, adding Gboard integration, people generation capabilities, and more generative AI editing tools.

However, as Gemini expands aggressively, Pixel Studio’s role has gradually been sidelined. Google had already begun quietly removing some features in the previous update, and v2.3 is the final step: the app’s main interface has been completely hollowed out, leaving only an entry point that redirects to Gemini. Even so, Google still preserves users’ past creations in Pixel Studio and has not forced their deletion, serving as the final trace of this short-lived tool.

This update still appears to be rolling out gradually and hasn’t reached all devices yet, but Android Authority has already obtained the APK and shared actual screenshots of Pixel Studio in its disabled state. From the screenshots, the app appears to have lost all functionality, leaving only buttons and prompts that direct users to Gemini.

Pixel Studio’s exit is not surprising. Over the past year, Google has clearly centralized generative AI’s core capabilities into Gemini, while strengthening image and animation generation through models like Nano Banana. Rather than maintaining multiple overlapping applications, Google has evidently chosen to concentrate resources and build a more consistent AI creative experience. For users, Pixel Studio’s disappearance may cause some inconvenience, but from Google’s product strategy perspective, this is the inevitable result of integrating its ecosystem and reducing redundant tools.
