Google Gemini AI will partner with news media to provide trustworthy news reporting content.

Rather than let users of generative AI constantly question the credibility of the content they receive, which undermines their work or study efficiency, Google has chosen to partner with the Associated Press (AP) to provide more stable and trustworthy real-time news content.

Although in the collaboration post Google mainly emphasized that it will bring fresh content, most people probably believe that the intention behind directly partnering with news media is to actually improve the problem of AI-curated and delivered content being prone to falsehoods such as “hallucinations.”

Associated Press Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Kristin Heitmann specifically highlighted the long-standing partnership between AP and Google in delivering real-time, accurate news. In the generative AI era, the two have long been utilizing Pinpoint and JournalismAI tools in news reporting, helping professional journalists organize vast amounts of document data—enabling quick search and analysis while also building connections to assist research.

Google, meanwhile, noted that the program has supported local news journalists across 35 projects in 22 countries. Similar news content collaborations have been ongoing for over 20 years. It also helps these professionals reach broad audiences and generate advertising revenue through platforms including Google Search, YouTube, and the recently launched Gemini app.

That said, ever since generative AI suddenly exploded in popularity among users over the past few years, Google initially seemed somewhat slow to respond to market trends. But from Bard to Gemini, they’ve managed to find their footing when it comes to bringing generative AI technology to everyday users.

However, regarding the “ad revenue” mentioned earlier, there still doesn’t seem to be a concrete new direction. Come to think of it, Google Search’s AI Overviews feature has been out for a while now, but it still doesn’t seem to have truly reached Taiwan – have any of you actually seen it? (See more:Google announced that starting this week, AI Overviews is expanding to more countries, including Taiwan.)

To be honest, this situation is still somewhat concerning. When it comes to Google’s main revenue channels, it’s unclear whether they’ve truly found a stable way to monetize generative AI integration. This deeper partnership with news media, however, shows that Google may be continuously working to strengthen its differentiation from other services in areas like credibility.

After all, all current AI technologies are still basically very far from truly eliminating the public’s worry that “they” might answer questions randomly.

If Gemini has the opportunity to achieve higher credibility, I believe that in this red ocean of AI development, Google will ultimately gain a certain competitive advantage, maintaining its long-standing primary revenue source in the era of generative AI and continuing to hold its position in the tech industry.
