As the Apple ecosystem grows, it’s no surprise that their devices will become prime targets for spyware. Apple reveals iOS 16 easter egg Lockdown Mode to comprehensively protect against the risk of hired spyware attacks

Unexpectedly, there are also “One More Thing” Easter eggs for the latest features of iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura that will arrive in the fall.不过讲起来如果这个新的资安功能可以起到如苹果所说的效果的话,相信 iPhone 等苹果装置在企业甚至是政府机关的接纳度也将再创新高?

According to Apple’s announcement today, for the new generation of desktop and mobile device systems, they confirmed that they have added Lockdown Mode to help users protect users “who may be targeted by sophisticated digital threats, such as those developed by private companies and sponsored by state-sponsored mercenary spyware.”启动此模式,将可带来相对极端的系统保护功能。

In response to this model, Ivan Krstić, Apple’s director of security engineering and architecture, mentioned that although the vast majority of users will never be the victims of highly targeted network attacks, this innovative feature will be able to respond to the rarest and most sophisticated attacks, thereby protecting a small range of users who may be victimized. In order to support research in this area, Apple has even invested $10 million in funding civil society organizations to conduct research and publicity projects on the threat of hired spyware, hoping to contribute to network security.

Lockdown Mode will currently include the following protection features:

  • Messages: Blocks most message attachment types except images, and disables some features such as link preview.
  • Site Preview: Disables certain complex web technologies such as just-in-time compilation (JIT) unless the user excludes trusted sites from Lockdown Mode.
  • Apple Services: Block incoming invitations or service requests, including FaceTime calls, if the user has not first sent the call or request to the originator.
  • Blocks wired connections to your computer or accessories when iPhone is locked.
  • When Lockdown Mode is on, profiles cannot be installed and the device cannot be added to Mobile Device Management (MDM).

Apple emphasized that it will continue to strengthen the relevant functions and measures of this extreme security protection mode and openly invites cooperation from the security research community. The Apple Security Bounty program has also been launched with a bounty of up to $2 million to help identify this pattern; damages from lawsuits against NSO Group and other related organizations will also be used to “support the investigation, exposure and prevention of highly targeted cyberattacks and state-sponsored organizations that employ spyware developed by private companies.”
